Mix Your Granny Blanket by Stitched Up Craft
What is Being Made
The Mix Your Granny Blanket is a customizable crochet blanket pattern designed by Stitched Up Craft. This project allows crafters to create a personalized throw blanket by mixing and matching different stitch patterns and motifs. The blanket is constructed using modular square components and chevron sections that can be combined in various configurations to achieve a unique finished piece.
Project Type and Difficulty Level
This is a beginner-friendly crochet blanket project, making it an excellent choice for crafters new to blanket construction or those looking to expand their skills with a manageable pattern. The modular design allows beginners to work on smaller components before assembling them into the finished blanket.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Mix Your Granny Blanket pattern employs several fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern uses the magic circle method (with a chain circle alternative for those who prefer traditional techniques) to start motifs. Crafters will work with basic stitch combinations and build squares in the round, a classic granny square construction method. The pattern also incorporates chevron sections that add visual interest through directional stitch work, allowing for creative variation in blanket design.
Stitches Used
The following stitches are required to complete this project, all presented in US crochet terminology:
- Magic Circle (MC) – Used to start motifs in the round; a chain circle alternative is provided for those unfamiliar with this technique
- Double Crochet (DC) – The primary stitch used throughout the blanket components
- Chain (Ch) – Used for foundation chains and spacing between stitches
- Slip Stitch (SLST) – Used to join rounds and connect sections
- Single Crochet (SC) – Employed for finishing edges and joining components
Materials and Tools Required
The Mix Your Granny Blanket pattern is designed with yarn flexibility in mind. Crafters can work with DK weight yarn or Aran weight yarn, depending on desired finished blanket size and drape. The pattern accommodates various yarn choices beyond these recommendations, allowing for creative personalization.
For DK weight yarn, use 4mm and 4.5mm crochet hooks. For Aran weight yarn, use 5mm and 5.5mm crochet hooks. Additional tools needed include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and optionally a tape measure for those who want to monitor blanket dimensions during construction.
Sizing and Customization
The pattern provides detailed sizing information to help crafters plan their blanket dimensions. Individual granny squares measure approximately 11cm (4.5 inches) when worked in DK weight with a 4.5mm hook, or 15cm (6 inches) when worked in Aran weight with a 5.5mm hook. Chevron sections, when worked in four rows, measure approximately 5cm (2 inches) in height with DK yarn or 7.5cm (3 inches) with Aran yarn. This sizing information enables crafters to calculate how many components they need to achieve their desired blanket size, making the Mix Your Granny Blanket a truly customizable project.
