Product Description
The “Meissen Sweater” was inspired by the beautifully shaped and painted ornate designs of Meissen porcelain from my native Germany. This sweater is light and airy, and I added textured ribbing and lace details to copy the filigree edging of the porcelain pieces. The “Tulip lace design” which trails along the sides and sleeve centres was first used in traditional German sock knitting in the early 19th Century and mimics the textured China. The sweater has 10cm positive ease, and after completion of the shoulder saddles the body is knitted from the top down. I recommend this knit to advanced knitters.
Meissen Sweater by Anja Sammon
What is Being Made
The Meissen Sweater is a light and airy knitted pullover sweater designed by Anja Sammon of Julchen Knits. This advanced-level garment draws inspiration from the beautifully shaped and painted ornate designs of Meissen porcelain from Germany. The sweater combines traditional German textile heritage with contemporary design elements, featuring textured ribbing, lace details, and strategic shaping for a well-fitted construction.
Design Features and Inspiration
The design is rooted in the filigree edging and delicate aesthetic of Meissen porcelain pieces. The sweater incorporates the Tulip lace design, a historical pattern that was first used in traditional German sock knitting during the early 19th Century. This lace motif trails along the sides and sleeve centres, mimicking the textured qualities of fine porcelain. The designer has added a contemporary twist through the strategic use of regularly spaced purl rows and eyelet hole details.
Construction Techniques
The Meissen Sweater employs a top-down construction method with a distinctive approach to shaping:
- Shoulder saddles are completed first to ensure proper fit and structure
- Stitches are picked up from the saddle edges
- The body is knitted in the round from the top down, creating a seamless garment
- Three blocks of eyelet holes are positioned below the shoulder saddles to add body, shape, and visual interest to the soft fabric
- Regularly spaced purl rows are incorporated throughout for texture and contemporary styling
Stitches and Stitch Details
This advanced knitting project features multiple stitch techniques including lace stitches for the Tulip lace design, ribbing for textured edges and structure, and eyelet stitches that create decorative openwork. The combination of these techniques requires advanced knitting skills and attention to stitch detail.
Materials
The Meissen Sweater is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which contributes to the light and airy quality of the finished garment. Appropriate needles for 4-ply yarn are required for this project. The yarn weight choice ensures the sweater maintains its delicate aesthetic while providing adequate structure for the lace and textured elements.
Skill Level
This is an advanced knitting project suitable for experienced knitters. The combination of top-down construction, lace work, shoulder saddle shaping, and the precision required for eyelet placement demands strong foundational knitting skills and experience with complex stitch patterns.
