- The sweater is done as a large rectangle with a neck hole created in the middle. Mariposa Summer Sweater by Lulo Stitch Co
What is Being Made
The Mariposa Summer Sweater is a crochet sweater designed as an unfitted, oversized garment suitable for warm weather wear. This downloadable crochet pattern from independent designer Lulo Stitch Co offers six size options ranging from XS to XXL, making it accessible for various body types. The sweater is constructed using the filet crochet technique, a classic method that creates an elegant, lacy appearance through strategic placement of open and solid squares.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern centers on filet crochet, a foundational crochet technique that relies on creating a grid-like structure of filled and empty spaces to form decorative patterns and motifs. Filet crochet is worked from a chart, allowing crafters to follow visual instructions that represent where stitches should be placed and where spaces should remain open. This technique is ideal for creating intricate designs with a refined, delicate finish. The pattern is designed for intermediate-level crocheters who have experience with basic stitches and are ready to tackle chart-based pattern reading.
Stitches and Abbreviations
The Mariposa Summer Sweater utilizes fundamental crochet stitches that form the foundation of filet work:
- Chain (CH) – the foundational stitch used to create the base and structure of the garment
- Double Crochet (DC) – the primary stitch used to build the filet grid and create the fabric's body
- Yarn Over (YO) – the basic motion repeated throughout crochet construction
- Skip Stitch (SK ST) – used to create the open spaces within the filet pattern
Understanding how to read a filet chart is essential, as the pattern relies on visual representation of these stitches to guide the crafter through the design process.
Materials Required
The Mariposa Summer Sweater is worked with Category 2 yarn (sport weight), which creates a lightweight fabric perfect for summer garments. The pattern specifies Premier Cotton Fair in Cocoa as the featured yarn, though any sport weight yarn of similar yardage can be substituted. Yardage requirements vary by size: XS and S sizes require 3 skeins (951 yards/870 meters), M and L sizes need 4 skeins (1268 yards/1160 meters), and XL and XXL sizes require 5 skeins (1585 yards/1450 meters). A 4 mm crochet hook is used throughout the project. Additional supplies include scissors for finishing and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Sizing and Fit
Available in six sizes—XS, S, M, L, XL, and XXL—the Mariposa Summer Sweater is designed as an intentionally loose, oversized fit. The pattern provides finished measurements for width and length, allowing crafters to select a size based on desired ease and drape rather than exact body measurements.
