Product Description
The leg is about 13cm long to the top of the heel flap. The charted pattern continues to the toe decreases, for a foot of about 20.3 cm (medium women's).
The cuff starts with a tubular cast-on. I found the cast-on rows too tight when I used the Size 3 needle, so I switched up a size. If your tubular cast-on runs loose, or you decide to use another cast-on, you won't need the Size 4 needles.
The chart is a little long for letter-size paper, so you may want to print it out on US Legal paper.
Mandelbrot Sox by Nancy Hand
What is Being Made
Mandelbrot Sox are a pair of knitted socks designed by Nancy Hand and inspired by the mathematical Mandelbrot Set, which forms the basis of fractal patterns used in graphical applications. These socks feature a section of a Mandelbrot Set pattern integrated into the design, making them a unique blend of mathematics and textile art.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project worked using the primary craft of knitting. The socks are constructed using a specialized cast-on method that incorporates waste yarn, allowing the knitter to pick up stitches in a particular way to create the fractal pattern. This technique requires working with two different needle sizes and involves picking up loops of yarn between waste yarn loops to increase stitch count, demonstrating intermediate-level knitting skills.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern employs several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:
- Stockinette stitch as the base fabric, worked to a gauge of 7 stitches and 14 rows per 1 inch (2.5cm)
- Purl stitches used in the initial rows to create texture and structure
- Knit stitches alternated with purl stitches in the setup rows
- Waste yarn cast-on method, a provisional casting technique that allows for later pick-up of live stitches
- Loop pick-up technique, where the knitter uses the needle tip to pick up loops of sock yarn from between the loops of waste yarn and knit them, creating an increase from 30 initial stitches to 59 stitches, with a 60th stitch picked up to complete the round
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for 1 skein of Jitterbug sock yarn (110 yards, 100 meters) in the primary color, combined with Whirley Fig waste yarn in a similar weight for the provisional cast-on. The yarn weight is classified as 3-ply, which is typical for sock knitting and provides durability and elasticity.
Needles and Tools
Two sets of double point needles are required: US Size 4 (3.5mm) for the initial cast-on and setup rows, and US Size 3 (3.25mm) for the main sock construction. Needle size may be adjusted to achieve the specified gauge of 7 stitches and 14 rows to 1 inch (2.5cm) in stockinette stitch.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex techniques such as provisional cast-ons, stitch pick-up methods, and gauge-dependent construction.
