Magic Carpet Ride Knit Scarf by Susan Pandorf

What Is Being Made

The Magic Carpet Ride is an original lace weight knit scarf design created by Susan Pandorf. This finished scarf measures 12 inches wide by 60 inches long, making it an elegant accessory suitable for draping around the shoulders or wearing as a lightweight wrap. The design combines decorative beading with intricate lace patterns, creating a sophisticated garment that showcases advanced knitting techniques.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is executed entirely through knitting, a fundamental fiber arts technique that creates fabric by interlocking loops of yarn with needles. The Magic Carpet Ride elevates basic knitting by incorporating beading—a decorative embellishment technique where individual seed beads are integrated directly into the knit fabric as stitches are worked. This combination of knitting and beading requires careful attention to technique and is classified as an intermediate difficulty level, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their repertoire.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

The scarf features multiple distinct lace stitch patterns, each named after evocative themes that reflect the "Magic Carpet Ride" concept:

  • Persian Windows (Chart A)—A foundational pattern that incorporates beads and yarn overs with decreases to create an openwork design inspired by architectural elements
  • Portcullis (Chart B)—A structured lace pattern that creates a grid-like appearance
  • Lace Trellis (Chart C)—An openwork pattern that suggests climbing vines or lattice structures
  • Leaf Shadows (Chart D)—A pattern incorporating leaf-like motifs through strategic yarn overs and decreases
  • Dainty Chevron (Chart E)—A repeating V-shaped pattern that creates directional visual interest; this pattern is used as the gauge reference at 6 stitches per 1 inch when blocked
  • Transition (Chart F)—A connecting pattern that bridges between the various main stitch patterns

The pattern includes both charted instructions (visual representations of stitches) and written directions, allowing knitters to follow their preferred method. Core stitches referenced include knit stitches (k), purl stitches (p), yarn overs (yo), and slip-slip-knit decreases (ssk), combined with strategic bead placement to create dimensional texture.

Materials Required

The Magic Carpet Ride scarf requires 850 yards of lace weight yarn, a delicate yarn classification ideal for creating lightweight, drapeable fabrics with intricate stitch definition. The prototype was knit using Woolen Rabbit lace yarn in the Moroccan Spice colorway, though any lace weight yarn of comparable yardage and fiber content will work. Knitters will need US size 3 needles to achieve the proper gauge. Additionally, the design calls for 1400 size 8/0 seed beads—small decorative beads that are individually placed into the knit fabric—requiring a large eye beading needle to thread and position each bead. A stitch marker helps track pattern repeats, a tapestry needle assists with weaving in yarn ends, and an optional crochet hook may be useful for certain finishing techniques.

Gauge and Finishing

Proper gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished dimensions. The Dainty Chevron pattern should measure 6 stitches to 1 inch when blocked (wet-finished and dried to shape). The pattern specifically recommends knitting and blocking a gauge swatch before beginning the full project, as the fabric will measure somewhat differently before blocking than after. Blocking—a finishing process where the knit fabric is wetted, shaped to measurements, and dried—is critical for opening up the lace patterns and ensuring the scarf reaches its intended 12 by 60 inch finished size.
