Product Description
Madeleine Islands Shawl is a rectangular shawl full of beautiful lace textures that mimics seashells and the movement of the Ocean and sand. The details of the shawl beautifully showcase hand dyed colourways. The pattern is written for 5 colours, but you can knit it using a fade kit, you can use less colours or even using just one colour. If you are using multiple colours, I recommend for colour C and D to use similar colours, so they will fade beautifully. For the tassels you can use the yarn you used for the broderie or a different yarn. The Madeleine Islands Shawl is perfect for those single skeins you probably have in your stash!
Inspired by those beautiful Islands on the Atlantic Ocean across the coast of Quebec Province in beautiful Canada.
Madeleine Islands Shawl by Andrea Petrone
What is Being Made
The Madeleine Islands Shawl is a rectangular knitted shawl inspired by the natural beauty of the Madeleine Islands, located on the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Quebec Province in Canada. This design celebrates the coastal landscape through textile artistry, featuring intricate lace patterns that evoke seashells, ocean movement, and sandy textures. The shawl is an ideal project for utilizing single skeins from your yarn stash.
Design and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project showcases beautiful hand-dyed colorways through its carefully planned construction. The pattern is written for five colors, though it offers flexibility for customization. Knitters can work with a fade kit, reduce the number of colors, or create the shawl in a single solid color. For optimal color blending, the designer recommends using similar shades for colors C and D to achieve a beautiful fade effect. The rectangular shape and lace textures work together to highlight the nuances of hand-dyed yarn, making this an excellent choice for showcasing premium colorwork.
Techniques and Stitches
The Madeleine Islands Shawl employs lace knitting techniques throughout its construction. The lace textures are specifically designed to mimic natural elements—seashells and the fluid movement of ocean waves combined with sandy patterns. Broderie (decorative embroidery) is incorporated as a finishing detail, with options to use either matching yarn or contrasting yarn for the tassels.
