Product Description
Energetic, colorful, warm. The red sections flowing around this cowl reminds me of a volcanic eruption. Worked in the round on circular needles, this cowl features a short rows construction that it is not only decorative, but also serves as the necessary increase to form a hood from the body of the cowl. Comfy and useful: it can be worn as a simple cowl with a very very “soft” look because of the extra ease given by the hood, or - if the weather is cool - you can easily slide up the back part to protect your head. Lavic can be also used as a slouchy beret, just threading a strand through the fabric and gathering the top of it. Lavic is a great stash buster project, as it uses 5 colours of bulky yarn, in ridiculous quantities. You will need less than a skein for the MC, less than half a skein for the “second MC”, while needed amounts for CCs count as few yards each.
Lavic Cowl-Hood by Paola Albergamo
What Is Being Made
The Lavic cowl-hood is a versatile knitted neck accessory designed by Paola Albergamo that functions as both a cowl and a hood. This piece features an asymmetrical construction with a shorter front section and an extended back that can be worn pulled up over the head. The finished measurements are approximately 60 cm (23.6 inches) in circumference, with a front height of 14 cm (5.5 inches) and a back height of 42 cm (16.5 inches), making it a practical layering piece suitable for various styling options.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several foundational and intermediate techniques to create its distinctive shape and structure. The pattern utilizes wrap and turn (w&t) shaping, a short-row technique that allows the knitter to create the asymmetrical height difference between the front and back sections without cutting the yarn or working separate pieces. This method is essential for achieving the cowl-hood's unique silhouette where the back extends significantly higher than the front.
The design is worked in the round using a circular needle, which is a standard approach for seamless cowl construction. Yarn over (yo) increases are incorporated into the stitch pattern, likely creating decorative lace or textural elements throughout the piece. The pattern also includes knit 2 together (k2tog) decreases, which work in conjunction with the yarn overs to maintain stitch count while adding visual interest.
Stitches Used
The Lavic cowl-hood is constructed using fundamental knitting stitches combined to create the overall fabric. The primary stitches include:
- Knit (k) – the basic knit stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (p) – used to create textural contrast or ribbing elements
- Yarn over (yo) – creates deliberate holes and increases for lace or textured patterning
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease that balances yarn overs and shapes the piece
The combination of these stitches creates a fabric with visual depth and interest while maintaining the structural integrity needed for a wearable cowl-hood.
Materials and Gauge
The Lavic cowl-hood requires approximately 100 grams (157 yards or 145 meters) of bulky-weight yarn distributed across five coordinating colors in warm red and pink tones. The color breakdown includes approximately 40 grams of variegated rose-red (C1), 25 grams of variegated red-orange (C2), 20 grams of burgundy (CC1), 10 grams of fuchsia (CC2), and 10 grams of deep red (CC3). This multi-color approach creates a rich, blended appearance without requiring complex colorwork techniques.
Paola Albergamo suggests specific yarn options including Lang Yarns Mille Colori (colors 0060 and 0161) and Patons Shetland Chunky (Wine 78430, Pretty in Pink 78416, and Fiesta 78628), though any bulky-weight yarn with similar characteristics will work. The project is worked on a single 24-inch circular needle in US size 10 (6mm) or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge.
The gauge for this pattern is 14.5 stitches by 19 rounds over 4 inches by 4 inches (10 by 10 centimeters). Achieving accurate gauge is important for obtaining the correct finished measurements and ensuring the cowl-hood drapes properly when worn. Additional notions required include two stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends after completion.
Project Summary
The Lavic cowl-hood is an excellent intermediate knitting project that combines basic stitches with short-row shaping to create a modern, asymmetrical accessory. The use of bulky-weight yarn in multiple coordinating colors allows the piece to be completed relatively quickly while showcasing beautiful color blending.
