Product Description
This pattern is a small, crochet cross-body bag with a leather strap. I included the link to the strap I used, which is 47" in length. This purse is made from a simple rectangle, and contains no seaming with a yarn needle. The body is created from a rectangle folded in half with the direction of the rows running vertically. The purse flap is a contrasting stitch pattern running horizontally to add texture to the bag.
Lancaster Purse by Janine Myska
Project Overview
The Lancaster Purse is a beginner-friendly crochet bag pattern designed by Janine Myska and originally created by Knits 'N Knots in 2018. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for crafting a finished purse suitable for everyday use, with the option to customize the finished piece with a pre-made purse strap and clasps.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a structured crochet purse that can be worn with an attached strap. The finished bag is designed to accommodate a standard purse strap measuring approximately 47 inches in length, complete with clasps on both ends for secure closure and carrying.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Lancaster Purse pattern utilizes fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners learning core stitch work. The pattern incorporates the following stitches:
- Foundation Half Double Crochet (fhdc) – A special stitch used to create the foundation row, combining the chain and half double crochet into a single step. This technique eliminates the need for a separate foundation chain and creates a more elastic base.
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – A medium-height stitch that forms the primary fabric of the purse, offering good structure and drape.
- Single Crochet (sc) – Used for shaping and finishing details throughout the pattern.
- Double Crochet (dc) – Provides additional stitch variety for textural elements.
- Chain (ch) – Creates foundation rows and transition spaces between stitches.
- Slip Stitch (sl st) – Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions in the construction.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Lancaster Purse pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, specifically Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton Life in Ecru (#761-098). The project requires approximately 108 grams or just over one skein, totaling 201 yards (184 meters) of yarn. The yarn composition is 100% cotton, making it a breathable, durable choice for a frequently-used accessory.
A Size F-5 (3.75 mm) crochet hook is recommended for working with this yarn weight and achieving the intended gauge and fabric density. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing, and a pre-made purse strap with clasps measuring 47 inches in length for completing the finished bag.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet or looking to practice fundamental stitches. The use of basic crochet techniques and straightforward construction methods ensures accessibility for crafters developing their skills.
