Product Description
You will need 1271 meters of Fingering Weight yarn. You can use all one colour or mix colours.
The pattern has instructions on how I mixed my colours. I used 20g of 1 colour, and 100g x 3 different colours.
This shawl has a beautiful drape, because you increase and decrease the whole way through to give it a bias construction.
I would say the pattern is intermediate.
Hope you like my pattern.
Honeycomb Shawl by Nett Motherbear
What is Being Made
The Honeycomb Shawl is a crocheted wrap-style shawl designed as part of the boleros project collection. This finished piece measures 104cm at its widest point and 176cm in length, making it a substantial accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a lightweight wrap. The shawl features a honeycomb stitch pattern that creates an open, textured fabric with visual interest and drape.
Craft and Techniques
This is an original crochet pattern from independent designer Nett Motherbear. The pattern uses US crochet terminology and is classified as an intermediate difficulty level, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience beyond basic stitches. The design incorporates the honeycomb stitch, a technique that creates a distinctive cellular texture through strategic stitch placement and spacing.
The pattern offers flexibility in color work, allowing crafters to use a single solid color throughout or create a multi-colored version by changing colors as they progress. Detailed instructions for color changes are included within the pattern, enabling makers to replicate the designer's color progression or create their own custom combinations.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is the honeycomb stitch, which creates the characteristic open, textured appearance of this shawl. This stitch technique is worked using standard crochet methods to form the repeating hexagonal or cellular pattern that defines the design.
Materials Required
The Honeycomb Shawl requires 1271 metres of fingering weight yarn (also called 4-ply yarn). This lightweight yarn weight creates a delicate, drapeable fabric ideal for shawl construction.
The designer used a combination of premium yarns in the sample, including:
- Woolly Mamma yarns in 100% superwash merino (80m per 20g)
- Knitcrate Knitologie cozy sock yarn in 75% superwash merino, 15% nylon, and 10% cashmere blend (400m per 100g)
- Wooly Mamma yarns in 75% superwash merino and 25% nylon blend (425m per 100g)
These yarn selections highlight the versatility of the pattern—crafters can choose from various fingering weight options in different fiber compositions, whether pure merino, blended superwash varieties, or specialty sock yarns. The superwash properties make the finished shawl easy to care for, while the nylon and cashmere additions in some yarns provide durability and luxury feel.
Standard crochet hooks appropriate for fingering weight yarn are required, though the specific hook size is detailed within the full pattern instructions.
