Product Description
Show a new baby some love by wrapping them up in this top-down, all in one piece raglan sweater with these adorable heart buttons (or skip the buttonholes and use snaps). It's a simple pattern but with a little extra ribbing flare. Any DK weigh yarn will work, but I used Creamy White by Threads by Megan Nicole because her yarn is so soft and wonderful to work with and blocks beautifully.
The pattern has row-by-row instructions with photographs. You'll need 1 skein of yarn as well as both regular and double pointed knitting needles, 4 markers, a yarn needle, and waste yarn to hold the sleeve stitches. It's only available in newborn size.
Hearts Ablaze Baby Sweater by Many Creative Gifts
What is Being Made
The Hearts Ablaze Baby Sweater is a newborn-sized knit cardigan featuring decorative heart buttons as a charming design element. This raglan-style sweater is worked seamlessly from the top down, with dimensions of 7.5 inches (19 cm) in length from the top of the neck to the bottom ribbing, 15 inches (38 cm) around the chest, and 6 inches (15 cm) sleeve length measured from the end of the neck ribbing to the end of the cuff. The sweater is shown in creamy white with red heart buttons, creating a classic and adorable baby garment.
Techniques and Construction Method
This intermediate-level knitting project employs a top-down seamless construction method, which is a popular modern approach for creating fitted garments without requiring seaming. The sweater features raglan shaping, a classic sleeve cap style that creates diagonal lines from the underarm to the neckline, allowing for comfortable movement and a flattering fit on babies. The neck and body sections are worked in rows, while the sleeves are worked in rounds using double-pointed needles, combining different working methods within a single project to achieve the desired shape and texture.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern utilizes a special stitch technique for raglan shaping that involves picking up the bar between stitches with the right needle before the marker to create the characteristic raglan increases. The sweater incorporates ribbing at the neck, cuffs, and bottom edge to provide structure and elasticity. The body is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit stitch pattern that creates a smooth, classic fabric suitable for a baby garment.
