Heart of the Needle Cowl by Colleen Abbot

Project Overview

The Heart of the Needle cowl is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Colleen Abbot that combines a charming heart motif with cozy warmth. This downloadable PDF pattern offers flexibility in yarn weight and stitch complexity, making it adaptable to different skill levels and aesthetic preferences within the intermediate range.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a circular cowl—a tubular neckwarmer knit in the round using circular needles. The cowl features a decorative heart pattern as its focal design element, repeated around the circumference. The finished piece is designed to be worn around the neck for warmth and comfort.

Yarn and Materials

The Heart of the Needle cowl accommodates three yarn weight options, each with corresponding yardage and needle size specifications:

  • DK Weight: 250 yards, US size #6 circular needle (16" length), gauge of 22 stitches over 4 inches in stockinette stitch
  • Worsted Weight: 200 yards, US size #8 circular needle (16" length), gauge of 20 stitches over 4 inches in stockinette stitch
  • Chunky Weight: 150 yards, US size #9 circular needle (16" length), gauge of 16 stitches over 4 inches in stockinette stitch

The pattern includes a 16-inch circular needle requirement for all versions, which is the standard length for cowl construction to accommodate the stitches while working in the round.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Heart of the Needle cowl employs fundamental circular knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate knitters. The construction begins with casting on between 77 and 121 stitches depending on yarn weight, then joining to work in the round while taking care not to twist the stitches—a critical step in circular knitting. A stitch marker is placed to denote the beginning of each round.

The cowl features a textured border created through alternating purl and knit rounds (rounds 1-3), which is repeated both at the beginning and end of the pattern to frame the central heart design. This creates a finished edge that prevents rolling and adds visual interest.

Stitches and Pattern Details

The pattern utilizes two distinct stitch options, allowing knitters to choose based on yarn weight and desired aesthetic:

  • Chart A (Lace Hearts): Recommended for DK weight yarn (pictured in red in the original pattern), this version incorporates lace stitches to create an openwork heart motif. Lace knitting requires careful attention to yarn overs and decreases to form the decorative holes that define the heart shapes.
  • Chart B (Knit/Purl Variation): Designed for the chunky weight version (pictured in blue in the original pattern), this simpler approach uses only knit and purl stitches to create the heart pattern. This technique is more forgiving and suitable for those less experienced with lace work.

The heart pattern is worked from a chart that is read from right to left and bottom to top—standard chart-reading conventions in knitting. The pattern repeats around the cowl between 7 and 11 times depending on yarn weight, with the complete pattern worked for 3 to 6 repeats vertically to create the full height of the cowl.

The cowl is finished with a loose bind-off using the knit-two-together through the back loop technique, which creates a stretchy edge that accommodates the cowl's circumference and maintains elasticity for comfortable wear.

Difficulty Level

Classified as an intermediate project, the Heart of the Needle cowl requires familiarity with circular knitting, chart reading, and either lace techniques (for the DK version) or basic stitch pattern work (for the chunky version). The pattern's multiple yarn weight options allow intermediate knitters to select an appropriate challenge level.
