Hannah the Slug Amigurumi Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
Hannah the Slug is a small crocheted stuffed animal toy designed by Stacey Trock. This adorable amigurumi measures 4 inches tall and 5.5 inches long, making it a perfect size for a handmade gift or collectible toy. The slug character was created in May 2012 and represents an intermediate-level crochet project suitable for crafters with some experience in the craft.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This pattern uses fundamental amigurumi construction techniques to create a three-dimensional stuffed toy. The design employs the single crochet stitch as the primary building block, which creates a tight, dense fabric ideal for holding polyester stuffing securely. The pattern utilizes single crochet 2 stitches together (sc2tog) decreasing technique to shape the slug's body and create definition in its form. Crafters will work in continuous rounds, a standard amigurumi method that allows for seamless shaping without visible seams between rows.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch): Used to create the foundation and starting points for various sections
- Single Crochet (sc): The primary stitch throughout the pattern, creating the dense fabric necessary for stuffed toys
- Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog): A decrease stitch used to shape and taper sections of the slug's body
Materials and Yarn
Hannah the Slug offers excellent flexibility in yarn selection. The pattern can be worked with any weight yarn, from fingering to bulky weight, by simply using the hook size recommended on the yarn ball band and adjusting as needed. This adaptability allows crafters to customize the finished size and texture of their slug.
The sample shown in the pattern was crocheted using worsted weight yarn in Ella Rae Classic (100% wool). The color scheme features Yellow (Ella Rae Classic color #44) requiring 35 yards for the main color and White (Ella Rae Classic color #01) requiring 10 yards for contrast details. For a larger, extra-cuddly version, bulky weight yarn is recommended, though this will require additional yardage beyond the stated amounts.
Additional Materials
- Size H crochet hook: Recommended for worsted weight yarn (adjust hook size based on yarn weight used)
- Tapestry needle: Essential for weaving in ends and assembling the finished pieces
- 12mm black animal eyes: Provides character and expression to the completed slug
- Polyester stuffing: Used to fill the amigurumi for a soft, squishy texture
Design Notes
This pattern is ideal for crafters looking to experiment with different yarn colors and types while creating a charming stuffed animal. The intermediate difficulty level assumes familiarity with basic crochet stitches and techniques such as working in the round and managing increases and decreases. The slug's small size makes it a manageable project that can be completed relatively quickly, making it suitable for gift-giving or as practice for more complex amigurumi designs.
