Product Description
Little Flora the Bunny has their best dress on, ready for an Easter picnic. This toy is worked mostly in stockinette, with increases and decreases for shaping. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, this bunny is knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Flora the Bunny Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
Flora the Bunny is a charming stuffed toy bunny designed by Amanda Berry. This knitted creation features a dressed bunny character prepared for an Easter picnic, combining multiple yarn colors to bring the design to life. The finished toy is a soft, cuddly companion suitable for children and collectors alike.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is created using the knitting craft, which involves interlocking loops of yarn using needles to form fabric. Knitting is an ideal technique for creating three-dimensional toys because it produces a flexible, stretchy fabric that can be shaped and stuffed to create realistic forms. The bunny is constructed by knitting individual pieces that are then seamed together and filled with toy stuffing to achieve dimension and softness.
Difficulty Level
Flora the Bunny is classified as an intermediate difficulty pattern, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and techniques but are ready to tackle more complex projects involving shaping, color changes, and assembly.
Stitches and Techniques
While the pattern abbreviations section indicates standard knitting notation, the project employs fundamental knitting stitches typical of amigurumi-style toy construction. The pattern uses knit stitches as the primary stitch throughout the design. Knitters will need to understand basic abbreviations and follow written instructions to create the various body parts. The construction method involves knitting flat pieces that are subsequently seamed together, requiring proficiency with seaming techniques to join sections seamlessly.
Materials and Tools Required
The pattern calls for specific materials to complete Flora the Bunny:
- Yarn: 100% acrylic DK weight yarn (also known as double knitting, light worsted weight, or 8 ply). A minimum of 30 grams each of four yarn shades is needed: Brown, Pink, Blue, and White. The original bunny was knitted in discontinued yarns, but the designer recommends substituting with Stylecraft Special DK or Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, both of which are 100% acrylic DK yarns suitable for this pattern. Any similar 100% acrylic DK weight yarn can be used as an alternative.
- Needles: A pair of 3mm (US 2.5) single-pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm to 30cm for working the DK weight yarn
- Notions and Accessories: A darning or tapestry needle for seaming the pieces together, a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction, two 6mm domed black buttons for the eyes, and toy filling (several large handfuls) to stuff the completed bunny pieces and create a three-dimensional form
