Fietser Mitts by Andrea Rangel

What is Being Made

The Fietser pattern is a coordinating set consisting of a seamless cowl and fingerless mitts, designed to be worked together from a single skein of yarn. The fingerless mitts are offered in three sizes with hand circumferences of 6.5 inches (16.5 cm), 7 inches (18 cm), and 7.5 inches (19 cm). The cowl measures 13.75 inches (35 cm) in length with a smallest point circumference of 14.25 inches (36 cm) and a largest point circumference of 17.75 inches (45 cm), creating a fitted neckpiece that pairs beautifully with the mitts.

Techniques and Construction Method

Both the cowl and fingerless mitts are constructed using seamless, top-down in-the-round knitting techniques. This method allows knitters to work continuously in circular rows, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a polished, professional finish. The left and right mitts are identical in construction, simplifying the pattern for intermediate-level knitters. The top-down approach also provides flexibility for adjusting length as you work.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern employed throughout this design is Stockinette Stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the right side. Stockinette Stitch is achieved by alternating knit stitches on right-side rows with purl stitches on wrong-side rows when working flat, or by knitting every round when working in the round. This fundamental stitch provides an excellent canvas for showcasing the beautiful yarn qualities and allows the drape and fit of the cowl and mitts to be the focal point of the design.

Gauge and Yarn Requirements

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 28 stitches and 40 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette Stitch after blocking. This gauge is achieved using fingering weight yarn, which creates a fabric with excellent elasticity and durability suitable for frequently-worn accessories.

The cowl requires 315 yards (290 meters) of fingering weight yarn, while the fingerless mitts require 165 to 190 yards (150 to 175 meters) depending on size selection. The pattern is shown worked in Anzula Cloud, a premium fingering weight yarn composed of 80% Merino wool, 10% Cashmere, and 10% Nylon, available at 575 yards (526 meters) per 114-gram skein. A single skein of Anzula Cloud provides sufficient yardage to complete both the cowl and mitts, making this an efficient and economical project.

Needles and Tools

The cowl is worked on US #3 (3.52 mm) circular needles measuring 16 inches (40 cm), which accommodates the smaller circumference of the cowl while maintaining control over the stitches. The fingerless mitts are constructed using US #3 (3.25 mm) double-pointed needles, or alternatively a 32-inch (80 cm) or longer circular needle using the magic loop method. Needle sizes are recommendations only; knitters should select the needle size necessary to achieve the specified gauge with their chosen yarn, as individual tension varies.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated at an intermediate skill level, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques such as casting on, knitting in the round, and reading pattern instructions. The seamless, top-down construction and use of fundamental stitches make this an accessible project for those looking to develop their circular knitting skills and create a polished, coordinated accessory set.
