Product Description
Think of it as a bit of a mystery CAL where you have a pretty good idea how it will end.
Edna’s Traveler is a tribute to the lovely Martina Behm’s knitted Viajante.
I have thoroughly enjoyed making these large, versatile wraps, so when my crocheting friends asked me to create a version for them I had to make it happen. I am thrilled that Martina has given me the go-ahead to do so!
Edna's Traveler is crocheted using simple stitches -- mainly half double crochets and chains, with an edge option that uses double crochets -- but its size makes it a dramatic shawl/wrap/poncho/cowl.
The pattern offers recipe suggestions -- including several sizes and edge options -- and a Print & Go page for your project bag. It works well in a variety of yarn weights and amounts.

Edna's Traveler Crochet Shawl by Gina Lynette
What Is Being Made
Edna's Traveler is a versatile crocheted shawl, wrap, poncho, and cowl hybrid design created by independent designer Gina Lynette. This dramatic, oversized garment serves multiple purposes and works beautifully across various yarn weights and yardage amounts, making it an adaptable project for crafters seeking a statement piece. The design is a crochet interpretation inspired by Martina Behm's knitted Viajante, reimagined to showcase the unique qualities of crochet construction.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
Edna's Traveler employs simple crochet stitches to create its dramatic silhouette and impressive drape. Despite the straightforward stitch work, the generous size and thoughtful pattern construction combine to produce a sophisticated, wearable garment. The design demonstrates how fundamental crochet techniques can be elevated through scale and strategic shaping to achieve professional results. This intermediate-level project balances accessibility with visual impact, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle larger-scale pieces.
Stitches Used
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) — the primary stitch used throughout the pattern, providing structure and drape while maintaining relative lightness in the finished fabric
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: The pattern sample was created using Apple Tree Knits "Stellar Lace Gradient," a luxurious merino and silk blend yarn in lace weight. The project requires 2170 yards (1984 meters) and 200 grams of yarn, worked in the color Raspberry Cake. The lace weight classification ensures an airy, flowing fabric ideal for a shawl or wrap that drapes elegantly without excessive bulk.
Hook: Size G hook (4 mm) is used with the recommended yarn, creating a balanced gauge that produces the intended fabric density and drape.
Gauge: 20 half double crochets and 20 rows measure 4 inches (10.16 cm) in a square. Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project to ensure the final dimensions and drape match the designer's specifications.
Additional Notions: A darning needle for weaving in ends and blocking tools are required to finish the project professionally and achieve the intended finished dimensions and shape.
Design Versatility
One of Edna's Traveler's greatest strengths is its flexibility with yarn selection. The pattern adapts well to a variety of yarn weights and total yardage amounts, allowing crafters to customize the project based on available materials while maintaining the essential character of the design. This adaptability makes it an excellent choice for stash-busting or creating multiple versions in different colorways and fiber contents.
