Dicentra spectabilis is the latin name for the plant bleeding heart. The idea for this name came from Ravelry designer Janukke - thank you, Jana for this great idea.
This pattern combines a knitted triangle with a crocheted border. I think it is an easy to knit/crochet project dedicated for the advanced beginner as well in knitting as in crochet. The crochet border is given in words as well as in a photo tutorial. You will need 1 ball of Rowan Kidsilk Haze Stripe (50 g) or 1 ball of Lana Grossa Silkhair Print.

Dicentra Spectabilis Knitted Lace Shawl by Beate Zaech
What is Being Made
The Dicentra Spectabilis is a downloadable knitting pattern for a lace shawl designed by independent designer Beate Zaech. This intermediate-level project creates a delicate triangular shawl that is finished with a crocheted floral embellishment, combining knitting and crochet techniques in a single elegant garment.
Knitting Techniques Used
The shawl construction begins with knitting a long triangle as the foundation of the design. This triangular base is worked using garter stitch, a fundamental knitting technique that creates a textured, reversible fabric. Once the triangular section is complete, the pattern incorporates crochet finishing, where a separate crocheted flower element is added to complete the design. This combination of knitting and crochet techniques allows for both structural integrity and decorative detail.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The primary stitch used throughout the main body of the shawl is garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row. Garter stitch is ideal for lace-weight projects as it provides stability while maintaining the delicate, airy quality characteristic of fine yarns. The crochet finishing uses basic crochet techniques appropriate for the lace-weight yarn and the decorative flower motif.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
- Yarn: 1 ball (50 grams) of Lana Grossa Silkhair Print in lace weight
- Yarn Substitutes: The pattern notes that Rowan Kidsilk Haze, Grignasco Kid Seta, and Drops Kid-Silk are suitable alternatives with matching materials and yarn weight
- Needles: 1 circular needle in US 7–8 (4.5–5.5 mm) for the knitted sections, sized to achieve the specified gauge
- Crochet Hook: 1 crochet hook in US 4 (3.5 mm), with flexibility to adjust based on personal preference, though sizes no smaller than US 2.5 (3 mm) are recommended
- Notions: 2 stitch markers and 1 darning needle for finishing
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a garter stitch gauge of 14 stitches over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in width. The designer notes that achieving exactly 13 or 14 stitches with your chosen needle size is acceptable, as the exact gauge is less critical for this design. This relaxed gauge requirement reflects the nature of lace-weight yarn and the flexible nature of shawl construction, where minor variations do not significantly impact the finished garment.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Dicentra Spectabilis is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with delicate lace-weight yarns and combining multiple techniques. The straightforward garter stitch construction makes it accessible, while the integration of crochet finishing and the precision required when working with fine yarn provides an appropriate challenge for developing knitters.
