Dexter the Dog is a cuddly little puppy, and ready for a winter walk in their Christmas jumper and backpack. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the dog and outfits are knitted on single pointed needles (not in the round). The pattern includes instructions for knitting the dog, sweater, trousers, hat and backpack, and the outfits are removable to play dress up. Each is worked in acrylic DK yarns (double knitting/light worsted). The sweater incorporates a stranded colour-work pattern. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, knitting stripes, and seaming to finish.
Dexter the Dog is an intermediate-level knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating an adorable stuffed dog companion, complete with coordinating knitted outfits in multiple color options. The project is ideal for knitters seeking a charming amigurumi-style toy with customizable wardrobe pieces.
This pattern uses knitting as the primary construction method. The toy is created through flat knitting on single-pointed needles, with pieces subsequently seamed together and stuffed to form a three-dimensional figure. The pattern incorporates color-work techniques to add detail and visual interest to the dog and its accompanying outfits, requiring the use of bobbins for managing multiple yarn colors during knitting.
While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch abbreviations, the pattern employs standard knitting stitches typical of toy construction. The color-work elements suggest the use of intarsia or similar techniques to integrate the five different yarn shades seamlessly. Pieces are seamed together using a darning or tapestry needle, and the toy is stuffed with filling to achieve its final three-dimensional form.
Yarn: The pattern calls for 100% acrylic DK yarns (also known as double knitting, light worsted weight, or 8 ply). Approximately 30 grams each of five yarn shades are needed: Brown, Cream, Purple, Blue, and Green. The original toy was knitted in discontinued yarns; Amanda Berry recommends substituting with Stylecraft Special DK or Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, both of which are 100% acrylic DK weight and provide excellent stitch definition for toy projects.
Needles: A pair of 3mm (US 2.5) single-pointed needles with a minimum length of 20 centimeters is required for working the DK weight yarn at the appropriate gauge.
Notions and Notions:
This intermediate-level project is designed for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle color-work and toy assembly. The pattern provides a complete knitted dog figure plus multiple outfit options, allowing for creative customization and extended play value. The downloadable PDF format makes it accessible for immediate use, and the pattern is intended for personal use only.
