Product Description

I, like so many others, fell in love with Daisy’s hat she wore to the picnic with Mr. Mason. She also wore it in her “goodbye scene” with Alfred, part of which was unfortunately relegated to the cutting room floor. Here's what REALLY happened:

Alfred (looking sheepish): You know Ivy turned me down.

Daisy (looking honest and true): I do, yes.

Alfred (looking blind): I think I’ve been a bit blind where she’s concerned.

Daisy (looking agreeable): Love is blind.

Alfred (looking smitten): Maybe, but I’ve been a fool, you’ve been so good to me, so true, but I could never see it, never, until I SAW YOU IN THAT ADORABLE HAT!!!

Daisy (looking adorable): That’s kind of you to say, and good to hear. I made it myself, late at night by candlelight in my garret room high atop the Abbey.

Alfred (smacking his head): You cook, and also crochet??? I HAVE been a fool!!!

Daisy (looking like it’s payback time): *I loved you Alfr

Daisy's Picnic Hat by MADuNaier

Project Overview

Daisy's Picnic Hat is a beginner-friendly crochet hat design created by MADuNaier from MAD Cap Fancies. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a charming picnic hat sized to fit a standard adult head measuring 21-23 inches in circumference. The design combines three coordinating colors—gray, rose, and cream—to create a visually appealing finished piece suitable for outdoor wear.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a structured crochet hat designed for casual, outdoor occasions. The finished hat is proportioned for adult wear and features color blocking with multiple yarn shades to achieve a coordinated, polished appearance. The hat's construction uses a traditional crown-to-brim approach worked in continuous rounds.

Crochet Techniques Used

The hat is constructed using fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners. The pattern employs round-based construction, meaning the hat is worked in continuous circular rows rather than flat pieces. A key technique highlighted in the pattern is the use of a contrasting yarn guide line—a 12-inch piece of contrasting yarn placed at the first stitch of each round to help crocheters track their starting point and maintain consistent shaping throughout the project.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

  • Single crochet (sc) - The primary stitch used throughout the hat construction, providing a tight, structured fabric
  • Chain stitch (ch) - Used for foundational stitches and shaping transitions
  • Slip stitch (sl st) - Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between color sections
  • Single crochet decrease (sc dec) - Employed for shaping the crown and controlling fit; this decrease technique involves inserting the hook into consecutive stitches, pulling up loops, and drawing yarn through all loops simultaneously to reduce stitch count

Materials and Gauge

The pattern calls for 300 yards total of worsted weight yarn distributed across three colors: 90 yards of gray, 110 yards of rose, and 100 yards of cream. Crocheters will need a size I (5.5mm) crochet hook and a yarn sewing needle for weaving in ends and assembling color sections.

The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 single crochet stitches and 18 rows of single crochet equaling 4 inches. The pattern notes that crocheters should check their personal gauge and adjust hook size as needed to achieve the correct tension, as this directly affects the final hat size and fit.

Pattern Structure and Difficulty

Rated as a beginner project, Daisy's Picnic Hat uses straightforward stitching and clear construction methods. The pattern is designed to be accessible to newer crocheters while producing a polished, professional-looking finished hat. The use of single crochet as the primary stitch and basic shaping techniques makes this an ideal project for building foundational crochet skills.
