This is a crochet pattern to make a bobble heart blanket with written instructions and photos, that I designed myself.
To create a blanket with 12 squares which will be approx 35x26 inches (more if adding border)
Materials
300g of dk 8ply coloured yarn and approximately 100g of white or cream for the edging I found that 100g ball made 4 squares.
If you want a bigger blanket you could make 20 squares 5 down and 4 across and that would make it 43x35 inches approximately.
This is a modular crochet baby blanket composed of 12 individual squares that are crocheted separately and then assembled together. The finished blanket measures approximately 35 x 26 inches, making it an ideal size for a baby throw or nursery blanket. The design features bobble stitch hearts as the focal point of each square, creating a textured and visually appealing surface perfect for a beginner-friendly project.
The pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners while introducing decorative texture through the bobble stitch. The modular construction method allows crafters to work on individual squares at their own pace before joining them together, which is an excellent technique for managing a larger project. The pattern uses standard crochet abbreviations written in English US terms, with guidance on tension and hook size adjustments to accommodate different crochet styles.
This project requires DK weight yarn (8ply), which is a lightweight yarn ideal for baby blankets as it creates a soft, drape-friendly fabric. The pattern calls for 300 grams of colored DK yarn for the main squares and approximately 100 grams of white or cream yarn for the edging. Based on the designer's experience, one 100-gram ball of DK yarn will complete approximately 4 squares with some yarn remaining, allowing for flexible color combinations and creative customization.
For crochet hooks, the pattern recommends a 4mm hook as the standard size. However, the designer provides helpful guidance for adjusting hook size based on individual crochet tension: use a 4.5mm hook if your crochet tends to be tight, or use a 3.5mm hook if your crochet tends to be loose. This flexibility ensures that crafters can achieve consistent square sizes and overall blanket dimensions regardless of their natural tension.
The pattern is written in English US crochet terms and includes specific abbreviations for clarity. An important construction note applies to every row: at the end of each row, chain 1, and at the start of each row, the first single crochet should be worked into the base of the chain 1 from the previous row. This technique helps maintain even edges and consistent stitch counts throughout each square.
The modular design allows crafters to create blankets of various sizes by adjusting the number of squares made. The pattern provides flexibility in color selection, enabling you to create any color combination you prefer, or to make a larger blanket by increasing the number of completed squares beyond the base 12.
