Crochet Alpaca Wall Hanging by Manuska Crochet
Project Overview
This is an intermediate-level crochet wall hanging featuring an alpaca design, created by independent designer Manuska Crochet. The finished piece measures approximately 30 cm (12 inches) in height including tassels and 26 cm (10 inches) in width including wood backing, making it a charming decorative accent for any room.
What Is Being Made
The project creates a dimensional alpaca wall hanging with embroidered facial features and decorative embellishments. The design includes the alpaca's body, ears, and muzzle as separate crocheted components that are assembled together. The finished piece is enhanced with pompoms and tassels for added texture and visual interest, creating a playful and whimsical wall decoration.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This wall hanging employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The primary stitch used throughout the project is single crochet (sc), which creates a tight, dense fabric ideal for structured pieces. The pattern also incorporates chain stitches (ch) for foundation rows and slip stitches (sl st) for joining rounds and finishing edges. The construction involves working in the round to create three-dimensional elements, allowing the alpaca's features to take shape as you progress through the pattern.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The project requires multiple yarn weights and types to achieve the desired visual effect:
- Chunky and Worsted Weight Yarns: The primary crochet work uses two different yarns with a 4.5 mm crochet hook. The alpaca body is worked in Himalaya Rozetti Lolipop (209-05), while the background is created using Himalaya Home Cotton (122-05).
- Fine Weight Yarn: Phildar Phil Coton 3 in ecru (032) is used with a 2.5 mm crochet hook for the delicate ears and muzzle details, providing contrast and definition to the alpaca's face.
- Embellishment Yarns: Scheepjes Catona in Yellow Gold (208) is used for tassels and pompoms, with additional leftover yarns in three different colors providing variety for the pompom accents.
Tools and Notions Required
Beyond yarn and hooks, this project requires several additional materials to complete the wall hanging. You will need black embroidery floss for stitching the alpaca's eyes and facial features, applied with a tapestry or large sewing needle. A stitch marker (or yarn scrap) helps track your position during rounds. A small amount of fiberfill stuffing adds dimension to the alpaca's head and body components. Two crochet hooks are essential: a 4.5 mm hook for the main body and background, and a 2.5 mm hook for the finer facial details.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this project is well-suited for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle slightly more complex construction. While the stitches themselves are basic, the assembly of multiple components, working with different yarn weights and hook sizes, and adding embroidered details require attention to detail and moderate experience with crochet fundamentals.

This is a downloadable PDF pattern written in US American crochet terminology, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with standard American stitch abbreviations and conventions.
