Product Description
Cat Mat is my first attempt in dishcloth design which had been in the back burner for over 6 months. It uses the basic bias knitting that requires simple increase and decrease, and adding the cat design using cable / slip stitch combo. It features 3D cat paws and cat ears (and YES, they are adorable in real life or knitting lol). The traditional purl bump selvedge is totally improved to make it 360 degree (no bald spot at cast on or bind off). Options available for cast on method and body stitches. It comes with written instruction and knitting chart. A mini photo tutorial is added to help in knitting the difficulty rows.
Suitable for advance beginner and up
Enjoy the knitting :)

Cat Mat Dishcloth by Tomato68Evony
Project Overview
The Cat Mat is a knitted dishcloth pattern designed to create a striking 3D visual effect on a 2D surface. This intermediate-level knitting project combines bias horizontal rows with a garter stitch border to produce a textured, dimensional fabric suitable for kitchen use. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and uses minimal yardage, making it an efficient project for crafters looking to practice advanced techniques.
What Is Being Made
This is a worsted weight dishcloth featuring a cat-themed design created through strategic stitch placement and shaping. The finished dishcloth measures approximately 7.5 inches by 6 inches before blocking, making it a practical size for everyday kitchen tasks. The design emphasizes dimensional texture that distinguishes it from flat, traditional dishcloths.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Bias construction: Horizontal rows worked on the bias create diagonal movement and visual interest across the fabric
- Garter stitch border: A frame of garter stitch (knit every row) provides structure and definition to the piece
- Stitch increases and decreases: Strategic use of make one stitches, cable decreases, and other shaping techniques build the 3D effect
- Slip stitch techniques: Slipping stitches knitwise and purlwise creates texture and helps define pattern lines
- Cable and decorative stitches: Modified cable techniques and picot elements add visual depth and complexity
Stitches Employed
The Cat Mat pattern utilizes a comprehensive range of intermediate knitting stitches:
- Garter stitch (knit every row) for the border
- Knit and purl stitches as foundational elements
- Knit two together (k2tog) for right-leaning decreases
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) for left-leaning decreases
- Centre double decrease (CDD) for centered shaping
- Make one right (m1r) and make one purlwise for increases
- Knit front and back (kfb) for bar increases
- Modified cable two (MC2R) for twisted stitch effects
- Make picot (MP) for decorative edging details
- Slip stitches (sl1kw, sl1, sl2) for texture and stitch manipulation
Materials and Tools
The Cat Mat pattern accommodates two yarn options, both in worsted weight:
- Non-mercerized cotton option: 1.2 oz / 30 g, 48 yards / 44 meters of 100% cotton
- Acrylic option: 1 oz / 25 g, 42 yards / 46 meters of acrylic fiber
Required tools include knitting needles in size 3.50 mm / US 4 (available in circular, straight, or double point styles), a 3.25 mm / US 3 crochet hook, scissors, and a yarn needle for finishing. The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches by 44 rows over 4 inches in garter stitch before blocking, helping crafters ensure proper finished dimensions.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the Cat Mat requires solid foundational knitting skills and comfort with multiple decrease techniques, increases, and stitch manipulation. The combination of bias construction, cable variations, and decorative elements makes this pattern suitable for knitters who have completed several basic projects and are ready to develop more advanced shaping and texturing skills.
