Caroline Knit Sweater by Amy Miller

What is Being Made

Caroline is a lightweight transitional knit pullover sweater designed by Amy Miller. This downloadable knitting pattern features a classic silhouette with meticulous cable detailing. The pullover is available in seven sizes, ranging from approximately 34 inches to 51¼ inches bust circumference, with the sample shown measuring 36 inches and modeled with 3–4 inches of ease for a comfortable fit.

Techniques and Construction

The design emphasizes detailed cable work as its signature feature. Simple cables outline fluid texture across the garment, creating visual interest while maintaining the lightweight, transitional aesthetic suitable for layering. The construction uses standard knitting techniques including increases, decreases, and marker placement to shape the garment and maintain pattern alignment throughout.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern is Stockinette Stitch, which forms the base fabric and provides a smooth, classic canvas for the cable details. Cable stitches are strategically placed to create the outlined texture that defines the sweater's visual character. The pattern incorporates standard knitting abbreviations including knit (k), purl (m1p for make one purl), decreases (dec'd), cast on (CO), and bind off (BO) techniques. Markers (m) are used throughout to track pattern repeats and shaping points.

Yarn and Materials

Caroline is designed for The Plucky Knitter Feet yarn in the colorway Thank You Note. This yarn is a premium blend of 90% merino wool and 10% nylon, offering durability and softness. The yarn weight is 4-ply with a yardage of 425 yards per 100 grams. The pattern requires 4–5 skeins depending on size, with total yardage ranging from approximately 1,415 to 2,125 yards depending on the finished size selected.

Needles and Notions

The pattern calls for two needle sizes: Size 4 (3.5 mm) needles for the main fabric and Size 3 (3.25 mm) needles for ribbing or edging. Needle size should be adjusted as necessary to obtain the correct gauge. Additional notions include stitch markers and a tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 25 stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches when worked in Stockinette Stitch on the larger (Size 4) needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements and fit.

Difficulty Level

Caroline is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working with cable stitches and managing shaping across multiple sizes.
