Product Description
A simple hat with two fit and yarn options: A worsted weight beanie and DK weight scrunchy toque. Small cable insets and twisted rib add just enough interest without slowing you down. A toggle and I-cord drawstring on the Scrunchy version adds a fun twist. Perfect for quick gift knitting or creating a warm hat for yourself before a cold front rolls in.
Both hats are worked from the bottom up in the round. Instructions are written and a chart of the cable is also included. A photo tutorial is given on the last page for assembling the DK scrunchy version drawstring and toggle.

Caliper by Tori Gurbisz: Knitted Beanie and Scrunchy Set
What is Being Made
Caliper is a downloadable knitting pattern set that includes two coordinating accessories: a worsted-weight beanie and a DK-weight scrunchy. Both projects are designed by Tori Gurbisz and presented by Lachesis and Co. The beanie is available in four sizes (S, M, L, XL) to fit head circumferences from 17 to 23+ inches, while the scrunchy comes in three sizes (S, M, L). This beginner-friendly pattern allows knitters to create a matching set of practical, wearable items.
Beanie Specifications
Sizing: The worsted beanie is offered in four sizes with finished head circumferences ranging from 17 to 23+ inches. The medium size, shown in the pattern, fits a 21-inch head circumference. Finished measurements for the beanie range from 16 inches (small) to 21.75 inches (extra-large).
Yarn Requirements: The beanie is worked in Malabrigo Merino Worsted, a 100% Merino wool yarn with 210 yards per 100 grams. The pattern shown uses the colorway Garden Gate. Yardage requirements vary by size: approximately 100 yards for small, 115 yards for medium, 130 yards for large, and 145 yards for extra-large.
Scrunchy Specifications
Sizing: The DK scrunchy is available in three sizes (S, M, L) with finished circumferences ranging from 16.75 inches (small) to 20 inches (large).
Yarn Requirements: The scrunchy is worked in Viola Silky DK, a luxury blend of 50% silk and 50% Merino wool with 231 yards per 100 grams. The pattern features the Chimney Smoke colorway.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Both projects in this pattern are worked primarily in stockinette stitch, a fundamental knitting technique that creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern on the right side. Stockinette stitch is ideal for beginner knitters as it is straightforward to execute while producing professional-looking results.
The beanie is worked in the round, a common construction method for hats that eliminates the need for seaming. Knitters may choose between several needle options to work in the round: a 16-inch circular needle, a longer circular needle using the magic loop technique, or double-point needles. This flexibility allows knitters to select the method most comfortable for their skill level and preferences.
Gauge and Needle Requirements
Worsted Beanie Gauge: 17 stitches and 24 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch using US 9/5.5mm needles (or size needed to obtain gauge). Knitters should work a gauge swatch to ensure proper fit and finished dimensions.
DK Scrunchy Gauge: 20 stitches and 28 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch using US 6/4mm needles (or size needed to obtain gauge).
Needle Sizes: The beanie requires both US 8/5mm and US 9/5.5mm needles in 16-inch circular or double-point needle format. The scrunchy uses US 6/4mm needles.
