Product Description

Inside the Designer’s MindCaden Cowl is the first fair isle loop cowl that I designed. I wanted to use a simple pattern repeat, in this case 4 and 6 stitches repeat, to create something classic and modern, that will easily match different colour clothes. Knitting this fair isle cowl with a DK weight yarns gives it a chunky feel without being too bulky, it will keep you warm when you loop it around your neck and also looks fashionable when you just hang it as a statement accessory.

It starts by doing a provisional cast-on (crochet method), knitted in the round and then the two ends are grafted together using Kitchener stitch, creating a seamless fabric and at the same time maintaining the fair isle pattern.

Project Overview

The Caden Cowl is an intermediate-level knitted cowl designed by Rastus Hsu. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a versatile, loop-style cowl measuring 18.5cm in width and 140cm in length when formed into a circle. The design showcases beautiful colorwork and is suitable for knitters with some experience looking to develop their skills in patterned knitting techniques.

What Is Being Made

The Caden Cowl is a circular cowl—a tubular neckwear piece that loops around the neck. Rather than being a traditional flat scarf, the cowl is constructed as a continuous loop, making it a practical and stylish accessory. The finished dimensions of 18.5cm wide by 140cm in circumference create a generous cowl that can be worn in multiple ways, draped loosely or wrapped around the neck for warmth and visual interest.

Knitting Techniques

This pattern employs fair isle colorwork, a traditional stranded knitting technique that allows multiple colors to be worked into the fabric simultaneously. Fair isle creates intricate patterned designs by carrying unused yarn colors across the back of the work. The Caden Cowl uses eight distinct colors in the Donegal Tweed yarn, requiring knitters to manage multiple strands while maintaining even tension and consistent stitch size. The pattern is worked in the round using either a 40cm circular needle or double-pointed needles (DPN), eliminating the need for seaming and creating a seamless, professional finish.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which forms the smooth, V-patterned fabric base. The fair isle colorwork is integrated into the stockinette stitch foundation, meaning knitters work knit stitches while managing the color changes. The pattern requires familiarity with basic knitting fundamentals, including casting on, knit stitches, and binding off, combined with the intermediate skill of managing multiple yarn colors in stranded knitting.

Yarn and Materials

The Caden Cowl requires approximately 294g and 736 meters (809 yards) of DK weight yarn. The recommended yarn is Donegal Tweed Wool, a blend of 80% lambswool and 20% nylon, which provides durability and elasticity. The pattern specifies eight colorways in the following quantities:

  • Vanilla (Cream): Approximately 57g/143m (157yds)
  • Cherry (Maroon): Approximately 54g/135m (148yds)
  • Stream (Navy Blue): Approximately 54g/135m (148yds)
  • Everglade (Teal): Approximately 36g/90m (99yds)
  • Quarry (Dark Grey): Approximately 32g/80m (88yds)
  • Elliot (Mustard): Approximately 30g/75m (83yds)
  • Flame (Red): Approximately 19g/48m (53yds)
  • Flannel (Light Grey): Approximately 12g/30m (33yds)

Needles and Tools

The pattern calls for US 8/5.0mm circular needles in a 40cm (16-inch) length, or double-pointed needles of the same size if preferred for working in the round. Additional materials include a stitch marker for tracking the beginning of each round, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, scrap yarn (preferably cotton) for provisional cast-on techniques, and a 5.0mm crochet hook for finishing details.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

Achieving proper gauge is essential for this pattern. In stockinette stitch, the gauge is 19.5 stitches and 30 rows per 10cm (4 inches) after blocking. When working the fair isle pattern, the gauge shifts slightly to 23.5 stitches and 24 rows per 10cm (4 inches) after blocking, reflecting the tighter fabric created by managing multiple yarn colors. All measurements are taken after blocking, which is an important finishing step for evening out the stitches and achieving the intended dimensions of 18.5cm width and 140cm length.
