Bumblebee Cardigan by Karin Burkart
What is Being Made
The Bumblebee Cardigan is a colorful crochet cardigan constructed entirely from granny squares. This intermediate-level project features a cheerful color-blocked design using grey, yellow, and white yarns. The finished cardigan has a one-size construction with approximate dimensions of 112 cm circumference and 64 cm length, and is fastened with four buttons approximately 15mm in size. The modular granny square construction allows for size customization by adjusting the individual square dimensions.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs the classic granny square technique as its primary construction method. The cardigan is built by creating multiple solid granny squares that are then assembled together to form the garment pieces. The modular nature of this approach makes it an engaging project to work, as crafters can visually see the cardigan taking shape with each completed square. The granny square method is particularly suitable for this design because it allows for easy color changes between squares, creating the distinctive bumblebee color pattern. Sizing flexibility is built into the design—crafters can adjust the overall garment dimensions by working larger or smaller individual squares.
Stitches Used
The Bumblebee Cardigan pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches throughout its construction. The primary stitches include:
- Single crochet (sc) - basic short stitch
- Double crochet (dc) - taller stitch used extensively in the granny squares
- Chain stitch (ch) - foundational stitch for creating the base ring and spacing
- Slip stitch (sl st) - used to join rounds and connect stitches
- Chain space (CHSP) - the gap created by chain stitches, which is a key design element of traditional granny squares
The pattern is written in US crochet terminology, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with American stitch abbreviations and definitions.
Materials
The Bumblebee Cardigan requires DK weight yarn in three coordinating colors to achieve the characteristic bumblebee aesthetic. The yarn quantities are: 350 grams of grey (Colour A), 200 grams of yellow (Colour B), and 200 grams of white (Colour C). A 4.5mm crochet hook is used throughout the project. Each granny square should measure 13 x 13 centimeters when worked to the specified gauge with these materials. The pattern also calls for four buttons, each approximately 15mm in diameter, to complete the cardigan's front closure.
