Bubbles and Baubles Knitted Shawl by Tori Gurbisz

Project Overview

Bubbles and Baubles is a knitted shawl design created by independent designer Tori Gurbisz. This downloadable PDF pattern offers an intermediate-level knitting project that combines decorative beadwork with strategic shaping techniques to create a sophisticated accessory featuring textural interest and dimensional embellishment.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a knitted shawl enhanced with bead placement for visual appeal and texture. The design incorporates multiple charted sections that work together to build the shawl's structure, with beads strategically positioned throughout to create the "baubles" element referenced in the design name. The shawl construction uses a combination of increases and decreases to shape the fabric as it grows from the cast-on edge.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Bubbles and Baubles shawl employs several intermediate knitting techniques to achieve its finished aesthetic:

  • Yarn overs (yo) create openwork sections and contribute to the shawl's drape and visual lightness
  • Increases including kfb (knit front and back) and kfbf (knit front, back, and front) add stitches for shaping and texture
  • Decreases such as ssk (slip, slip, knit), k2tog (knit two together), and s2kp (slip 2 stitches together, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over) create definition and control fabric expansion
  • Bead placement integrated throughout the pattern adds dimensional embellishment and creates the distinctive "baubles" characteristic
  • Edge stitches worked consistently on both right and wrong sides provide finished selvage edges
  • Chart-based construction using four separate charted sections allows for complex patterning and precise stitch placement

Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern utilizes a comprehensive range of knitting stitches organized through charted instructions:

  • K – Knit stitch (worked on right side rows and wrong side rows at edges)
  • P – Purl stitch (worked on wrong side rows at edges)
  • yo – Yarn over for creating eyelet and openwork effects
  • ssk – Slip, slip, knit decrease
  • k2tog – Knit two together decrease
  • k3tog – Knit three together decrease for more pronounced shaping
  • p2tog – Purl two together decrease
  • p3tog – Purl three together decrease
  • s2kp – Slip 2 stitches together, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over (centered double decrease)
  • kfb – Knit front and back for single increase
  • kfbf – Knit front, back, and front for double increase
  • B – Bead placement marker indicating where beads are incorporated into the fabric

Pattern Structure and Charts

The design is organized into four separate charted sections (Chart One through Chart Four) that build upon each other. Each chart includes edge stitches worked on both right and wrong sides, with Charts Two through Four omitting edge stitch notation to conserve space. The charts range from 12 rows to 24 rows, allowing for graduated complexity and shaping as the shawl develops. Multiple pattern repeats are indicated throughout the charts, enabling customization of the final shawl dimensions.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, also known as fingering or sport weight depending on fiber content and construction. The 4-ply weight provides excellent stitch definition for the charted pattern work and allows beads to sit prominently on the fabric surface. While specific needle size recommendations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, 4-ply yarn typically works well with US sizes 1–3 (2.25–3.25mm) needles, though the actual pattern instructions would specify the recommended needle size for proper gauge. Beads appropriate for threading onto yarn or securing during knitting are required as specified by the "B" markers throughout the
