Bow Clutch Bag Knitting Pattern by Wendy Kippax – Pattern Summary

The Bow Clutch Bag is a charming and practical knitted accessory designed by Wendy Kippax and published by Deramores. Available as a downloadable PDF, this pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an ideal project for those who are new to knitting or looking for a relaxed, enjoyable make. The finished item is a stylish clutch bag featuring a decorative knitted bow, combining two complementary colourways for a polished, eye-catching result.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a knitted clutch bag complete with an attached decorative bow. The bag has a structured rectangular body with ribbed edges and a textured central panel, giving it both visual interest and a neat, finished appearance. The bow is knitted separately and added as an embellishment, creating a fashion-forward accessory that is equally suited to everyday use or special occasions.

Materials Required

Yarn

  • Deramores Studio DK in Green Tea (Yarn A) – 1 x 100g ball
  • Deramores Studio DK in Merlot (Yarn B) – 1 x 100g ball

Deramores Studio DK is a DK weight acrylic yarn, known for its softness, durability, and wide colour range. Acrylic yarn is particularly well suited to accessory projects like this one, as it holds its shape well, is easy to care for, and is available in a broad palette of shades. The two-colour combination of Green Tea and Merlot gives the finished bag a sophisticated, contrasting look.

Needles

  • 4mm straight knitting needles

Tension

  • 24 stitches x 38 rows over Cayce Stitch using 4mm needles
  • 24 stitches x 28 rows over Moss Stitch using 4mm needles

Achieving the correct tension is important for ensuring the bag comes out at the intended size and shape. It is always recommended to knit a tension swatch before beginning the main project, especially when working with a new yarn or needle size.

Techniques and Construction

Bag Body

The body of the clutch is worked flat on 4mm straight needles using Yarn B (Merlot) to cast on 58 stitches. The construction follows a clear, logical sequence:

  • The bag opens and closes with k2, p2 rib borders of 6 rows each, worked in Yarn B (Merlot) at both the cast-on and cast-off edges. Ribbing creates a naturally elastic, tidy edge that gives the clutch a professional finish.
  • The main body panel is worked in Yarn A (Green Tea) using the Cayce Stitch, continuing until the work measures 26.5cm, ending on a right side row. This creates the central, textured section of the bag.

Decorative Bow

The bow is knitted separately using Yarn B (Merlot), cast on with 26 stitches and worked in Moss Stitch. The shaping of the bow involves:

  • Decreasing with k2tog at both ends on the 5th row and then every following 4th row until 12 stitches remain, creating the cinched centre of the bow shape.
  • Increasing with kfb at both ends on the next and every following 8th row until 28 stitches are reached, forming the other half of the bow.
  • Additional straight rows are worked at each stage to complete the bow's symmetrical silhouette.
