Product Description
An artistic take on the classic bluebell. This is one of those patterns that took me SO many tries to get right...but I could not be happier with the end result! I've always wanted to feature the traveling vine lace in one of my patterns, and I finally found the perfect design for it.

Bluebell Baby Hat by Wonderful Woodlands
Project Overview
The Bluebell Baby Hat is a downloadable knitting pattern from the Down by the Pond Collection, designed for infants and toddlers ranging from newborn through three years of age. This advanced-level knitting project creates a charming hat featuring a decorative scallop edge and is worked in the round using double-pointed needles.
Sizes and Finished Measurements
The pattern accommodates four size options:
- Size 0–3 months: 12" circumference (unstretched), 6" length
- Size 3–6 months: 14" circumference (unstretched), 6.5" length
- Size 6–12 months: 16" circumference (unstretched), 7.5" length
- Size 1–3 years: 18" circumference (unstretched), 7.5" length
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires worsted weight yarn in two colors: navy and sky. The specific yardage requirements are provided in the full pattern. Knitters will need double-pointed needles in US sizes 3 and 7, stitch markers to track rounds, and a tapestry needle for finishing.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Bluebell Baby Hat employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques that contribute to its advanced difficulty rating. The hat is constructed in the round, a method that creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for fitted garments like hats.
The pattern features a distinctive scallop edge created through a combination of yarn overs and decreases. Key stitches used throughout the pattern include:
- Yarn over (yo): Creates decorative eyelet holes and lace elements
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease stitch
- Knit two together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease stitch
- Purl: Used in foundational rounds to establish texture
The scallop edge construction begins with casting on (96, 108, 120, or 132 stitches depending on size) using the long tail cast-on method with navy yarn on US 7 needles. The pattern then transitions through color changes and decorative stitch sequences, with repeat sections marked by asterisks (*...*) to streamline instructions.
Construction Method
The hat is worked from the bottom up in circular rounds. The initial scallop edging is created through a series of purl rounds and ornamental yarn-over and decrease combinations that form the characteristic wavy border. The color work incorporates both navy and sky yarn, creating visual interest and definition between pattern sections.
Advanced knitters will appreciate the precision required for the multiple decrease sequences and the management of stitch markers throughout the circular construction, making this an engaging project for experienced crafters seeking to refine their skills.
