Product Description
Big Stitch Sweater is a top-down circular yoke sweater that features my most popular colorwork pattern, giant loops of knit stitches. Here I modified it by adding "live stitches" as the top round, the colorwork "big stitches" that get larger toward the chest and stretch in last rounds, so you can see the strands of "yarn" between the "big stitches". See my Big Stitch Beanie that started this series of patterns two years ago.

Big Stitch Sweater by Nailya Plaskey
What is Being Made
The Big Stitch Sweater is a top-down circular yoke sweater designed by Nailya Plaskey. This intermediate-level knitting project features a distinctive colorwork pattern showcasing giant loops of knit stitches that progressively enlarge toward the chest. The design incorporates "live stitches" as the top round, creating a unique visual effect where the yarn strands between the oversized stitches become visible and prominent in the final rounds. The sweater is available in nine sizes, with finished bust dimensions ranging from 33.5 inches (85 cm) to 64 inches (162.5 cm), making it suitable for various body measurements.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The top-down construction method begins at the yoke and works downward, allowing for easy fitting adjustments and the ability to try on the garment as you progress. Circular yoke shaping creates the fitted upper portion of the sweater. The pattern incorporates colorwork techniques, specifically a modified version of Nailya Plaskey's signature big stitch motif. The use of live stitches as a starting point adds technical complexity and visual interest. The expanding stitch pattern creates deliberate negative space, allowing yarn strands to show between the enlarged stitches, which is an intentional design feature rather than a construction flaw.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitches: The foundation of the sweater, particularly large or oversized knit stitches that form the distinctive colorwork pattern
- Live stitches: Used as the top round to begin the yoke construction
- Colorwork stitches: Multi-color knitting techniques that create the big stitch pattern, which expands progressively toward the chest area
Materials
The Big Stitch Sweater is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition for displaying the colorwork pattern and oversized stitches. The pattern requires circular knitting needles appropriate for the 4-ply yarn weight to accommodate the top-down, in-the-round construction method. The exact yardage requirements and specific yarn recommendations are detailed within the pattern documentation.
Design Heritage
The Big Stitch Sweater builds upon Nailya Plaskey's earlier Big Stitch Beania pattern, which originated this distinctive design concept two years prior. The sweater represents an evolution of that successful motif, adapted and enlarged for a full garment with modified construction techniques that enhance the visual impact of the signature big stitch colorwork.
