Product Description
Texture and lacy beauty in the same pattern. That is what the Bark pattern is all about. This is a narrow shawl that is easy to use as a scarf aswell.
I made it using 3 skeins Filcolana New Zealand lamb wool (300 m/50 g) and 4 skeins Filcolana Tilia Silk Mohair (210 m/35 g). The two yarns are held together throughout.
The shawl is crocheted in one piece from tip to tip. It is 2 m long and 40 cm wide at widest point.
The pattern comes with written instructions and a chart for the beginning and end tip of the shawl.
Bark Crocheted Shawl by Sidsel Sangild
What is Being Made
The Bark shawl is a narrow, flowing crocheted shawl designed by Sidsel Sangild. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 2 meters long and 40 centimeters wide at its widest point, making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or draping. The shawl is crocheted from tip to tip, resulting in a graceful, tapered silhouette.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Bark shawl employs post stitches as its primary design element, creating distinctive texture and visual interest throughout the piece. Post stitches are worked around the posts of previous stitches rather than into the tops of stitches, producing a raised, dimensional effect that gives the shawl its characteristic appearance.
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches including:
- Double crochet (dc) — the primary stitch structure
- Front post stitches (F) — worked around the front of post stitches
- Back post stitches (B) — worked around the back of post stitches
- Chain stitches (ch) — used for foundation and shaping
The pattern includes charted sections for both the beginning and end of the shawl, providing visual guidance alongside written instructions in US crochet terminology.
Materials and Gauge
The Bark shawl pattern calls for two complementary yarns held together throughout the project:
- New Zealand lamb wool from Filcolana (300 m per 50 g, colour 126) — 3 skeins required
- Tilia Silkmohair from Filcolana (195 m per 25 g, colour 289) — 4 skeins required
A 5 mm crochet hook is used with these yarns held as one strand throughout. The pattern is worked in 4-ply weight yarn, and after 16 rows of crocheting and blocking, the piece measures 20 centimeters in length, establishing the gauge for the project.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it uses basic crochet stitches, the combination of post stitches, working with two yarns held together, and reading charted sections requires solid foundational crochet skills and comfort with stitch variation.
