Product Description
Hello……..and thank you so much for considering my pattern “Baby Hugs” Baby Blanket, which is written in US terms. By using a similar yarn weight to which I used, the finished blanket should measure approximately 36 inches ( 89cm) x 36 inches ( 89cm); otherwise you can use ANY weight/type of yarn and hook size you prefer. For mine, I used a - 4 ply ( Sport/Fingering ) weight Cotton. A natural fibre for baby for any season of the year. The only stitch patterns I have used in this blanket are: HDC, SHELL (2 hdc/s), SC and BLHDC (back loop hdc).
All the best and enjoy! Daisy

What is Being Made
The Baby Hugs Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet baby blanket designed by by.Meadow.Daisies. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 36 inches by 36 inches (89cm x 89cm) when made with the recommended yarn weight. The blanket is an ideal project for crafters new to crochet, offering a manageable size and straightforward construction suitable for gifting to newborns and infants.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Baby Hugs Blanket employs fundamental crochet techniques that make it accessible for beginners while creating visual interest and texture. The pattern utilizes a combination of basic stitch work and simple shaping methods. The designer has intentionally kept the technique repertoire limited to core stitches, allowing new crocheters to build confidence and practice foundational skills without overwhelming complexity.
Stitches Used
This pattern features a focused selection of essential crochet stitches:
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) – a fundamental stitch that serves as a primary building block throughout the blanket
- Shell Stitch – created using 2 half double crochets to form decorative shell elements that add texture and visual appeal
- Single Crochet (SC) – used for shaping and finishing details
- Back Loop Half Double Crochet (BLHDC) – a variation that works through only the back loop of stitches, creating distinct ridged textures and adding dimension to the design
The combination of these stitches creates a blanket with varied texture while remaining suitable for beginner-level crocheters.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern was designed using Baby Bella by Tootgarook, a 4-ply sport weight yarn made from 100% cotton. This natural fiber choice makes the blanket suitable for babies across all seasons, providing breathability and comfort. Each 50-gram ball contains approximately 175-200 yards. The project requires approximately 12 to 14 balls of yarn, depending on the final size chosen by the crocheter.
Hook and Notions: An E/4 hook (3.25mm) is recommended for use with the specified yarn weight. The pattern calls for a tapestry or darning needle for weaving in yarn ends and finishing, plus scissors for cutting yarn.
Gauge: The pattern specifies a tension of 28 stitches by 36 rows, which helps ensure the finished blanket reaches the intended dimensions.
Pattern Format and Difficulty
This is a downloadable PDF pattern written in US crochet terms, making it accessible to English-speaking crocheters. The beginner difficulty level makes it an excellent first blanket project. The designer notes that while the pattern was created with specific yarn and hook specifications, crafters have the flexibility to substitute any yarn weight or type with corresponding hook size adjustments, allowing for creative customization and yarn preference.
