Product Description
Want to make a shawl with one skein of your favorite variegated sock yarn, but don't want to deal with short rows or binding off a gazillion stitches? This shawl is the perfect alternative!
It's knit side-to-side in garter stitch, starting with 3 stitches and ending with 3 stitches. In fact, you'll never have more than 73 stitches on your needles. The trapezoid shape with its clean lines is flattering and has nice pointy ends for tying (and is easy to block). Two lines of continuous braid stitch accent the shawlette and give it interest and added texture.
This trapezoid shawlette measures 65" (165 cm) at top width and 28" (71 cm) at bottom width. It is 13" (33 cm) high, with a 28" (71 cm) diagonal wingspan on each side. (All measurements are after blocking.)
Arcata Shawlette by knittervee
What is Being Made
The Arcata Shawlette is a trapezoid-shaped knitted shawlette designed by Valerie Oliner (knittervee). This is a lightweight, wearable wrap that offers generous coverage while maintaining an elegant silhouette. The finished piece measures 65 inches across the top width and 28 inches at the bottom width, with a height of 13 inches and diagonal wingspans of 28 inches on each side after blocking. The trapezoid construction makes this shawlette versatile for draping across the shoulders or wearing as a decorative wrap.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Arcata Shawlette employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters. The pattern utilizes garter stitch as the primary fabric structure, which is created by knitting every row. This technique produces a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. Additional techniques incorporated include yarn overs for creating decorative increases and shaping, knit through the back loop (k-tbl) for twisted stitches, knit front and back (k f&b) for increases, and knit two together (k2tog) for decreases. The pattern also employs slip stitches worked purlwise and stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping sections throughout the construction.

Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Arcata Shawlette is designed to be worked with Malabrigo Sock yarn, a premium superwash merino option composed of 100% superwash merino wool. One skein provides 440 yards (402 meters) of yardage per 100 grams, making it an efficient project requiring minimal yardage. The recommended colorway shown is Turner. The yarn is classified as Light Fingering weight (also known as 3-ply or 4-ply), which creates delicate, refined fabric suitable for shawlettes and wraps.
The pattern calls for US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches in length. Circular needles accommodate the increasing stitch count as the shawlette expands from the top cast-on edge. Additional materials include five stitch markers for tracking pattern sections and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends during finishing.
Gauge and Sizing Information
The recommended gauge is 24 stitches and 44 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in garter stitch and measured before blocking. However, the pattern notes that correct gauge is not essential, though achieving the specified gauge will produce the intended finished measurements. Blocking is recommended to achieve the final dimensions, as the measurements provided (65 inches top width, 28 inches bottom width, 13 inches height, and 28-inch diagonal wingspans) are all taken after blocking. This flexibility makes the pattern accessible to knitters with varying tension and experience levels.
