Product Description

Summer Blooms is the 2nd in a series of four shawls that I have called the Four Seasons Collection.

Spring Blossom Shawl

Autumn Leaves Shawl

Winter Snow Shawl

This is a crescent shaped shawl, worked in one piece, from the bottom up. Cast on using a larger sized needle than used to knit the rest of shawl. The bottom border of the shawl is knitted first before completing the shawl body knitting in short rows.

Instructions for the shawl border section are provided in both written and charted format. However, instructions for the shawl body are written only.

The design for this Summer Blooms Shawl was inspired by the four seasons. I live in the northern hemisphere where we are currently enjoying our summer season. Occasionally the sun is shining and the flowers are in full bloom.

I have used Scrumptious 4ply yarn by Fyberspates to knit this shawl in a shade called Gold.

What Is Being Made

The Summer Blooms Shawl is a crescent-shaped knitted shawl designed to capture the essence of summer with its warm, vibrant aesthetic. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished piece measuring approximately 38.5 inches (98 cm) wide and 13.5 inches (34 cm) high, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering during warmer months. The design draws inspiration from the four seasons, with particular focus on the brightness and floral abundance of summer in the northern hemisphere.

Construction Technique

The Summer Blooms Shawl is worked in one piece from the bottom up, creating its distinctive crescent shape through a structured construction method. The pattern begins with a cast-on using a larger needle size than the needles used for the main knitting, which helps establish a flexible foundation. The bottom border of the shawl is worked first, establishing the base from which the rest of the piece develops. This bottom-up construction allows knitters to work systematically toward the top edge, building the shawl's shape as they progress through the pattern.

Stitches and Stitch Pattern

The shawl is knitted in a stitch pattern that creates texture and visual interest across the fabric. The pattern is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 38 rows over 4 inches using the smaller needles, though tension is noted as not essential for this design, making it more forgiving for knitters of varying experience levels. The specific stitch pattern contributes to the shawl's drape and the way it catches light, enhancing the summery quality of the finished piece.

Materials and Tools

  • Yarn: 544 meters / 594 yards of Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply yarn in shade 302 Gold. This yarn is a blend of merino and silk, which provides both warmth and a luxurious sheen. The 4-ply weight creates a lightweight fabric ideal for summer wear, while the merino-silk blend offers breathability and a subtle luminosity that complements the golden color.
  • Needles: Two circular needles measuring 80 cm in length—one 3.25mm needle (used for the main knitting) and one 3.75mm needle (used for the initial cast-on). The use of circular needles accommodates the shawl's width and allows for comfortable handling of the fabric as it grows.

Yarn and Fiber Characteristics

The choice of Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply yarn is central to the Summer Blooms Shawl's design success. The merino and silk blend creates a fabric with excellent drape and a subtle sheen that captures and reflects light beautifully. The Gold shade (302) evokes the warmth of summer sunshine and complements the floral inspiration behind the design. The 4-ply weight ensures the finished shawl is lightweight and breathable, making it practical for layering during summer evenings or air-conditioned spaces while maintaining visual impact through its color and texture.
