Floral Fantasy Quilt Pattern by Stephanie Sheridan for Michael Miller Fabrics

Floral Fantasy is a 57" x 57" intermediate-level quilting pattern designed by Stephanie Sheridan and released by Michael Miller Fabrics as a free downloadable PDF. The design draws its inspiration from the Mon Amie fabric collection, showcasing a sophisticated floral aesthetic through precise patchwork construction. This square quilt is an excellent project for quilters who are comfortable with basic piecing and ready to work with shaped templates and more complex block assembly.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a square lap or throw quilt measuring 57 inches by 57 inches. Its design incorporates a combination of pieced blocks, template-cut shapes, borders, and binding to create a cohesive floral-inspired composition. The pattern is well-suited for display as a decorative wall hanging or as a functional throw, and the color palette — anchored by graphite, magenta, pink, cream, and black — gives the finished quilt a bold yet romantic character.

Techniques Used

  • Template cutting: The pattern relies heavily on custom templates — specifically Template A, Template B, and Template C — which are used to cut curved or shaped pieces from multiple fabrics. Accurate template cutting is essential to achieving clean, precise block construction.
  • Rotary cutting: In addition to template work, standard rotary cutting is used to cut strips, squares, and rectangles across the width of fabric (WOF). Quilters will cut pieces such as 5-1/2" squares and 5-1/2" x 10-1/2" rectangles using this method.
  • Strip cutting: Multiple fabrics are cut into strips of varying widths — including 3-1/4", 5-1/2", 5-3/4", and 1-1/2" strips — which are then subcutted into the required shapes and pieces.
  • Patchwork block assembly: The quilt is constructed by assembling individually pieced blocks from the template and rotary-cut pieces, then joining those blocks into the overall quilt top.
  • Border application: A border is added using 1-1/2" WOF strips cut from Fabric B, framing the central design and adding definition to the finished quilt.
  • Binding: The quilt is finished with a traditional binding cut from six 2-1/4" WOF strips from Fabric A, sewn around the perimeter to enclose the raw edges.
  • Backing and batting assembly: The quilt sandwich is assembled using a 63" x 63" batting and approximately 3-1/2 yards of backing fabric, allowing adequate ease for basting and quilting.

Stitches and Construction Methods

  • Straight stitch piecing: All patchwork seams are sewn with a standard straight stitch on a sewing machine, which is the foundation of quilt top construction.
  • Quilting stitches: Once the quilt sandwich is assembled, quilting stitches are applied through all three layers — quilt top, batting, and backing — either by machine or by hand, to secure and finish the piece.
  • Binding stitch: The binding strips are attached to the quilt front by machine and finished to the back, typically by hand slip stitch or machine stitch.

Fabrics and Materials

The pattern is specifically designed around eight fabrics from the Mon Amie collection by Michael Miller Fabrics. Each fabric plays a distinct role in the quilt's color and design structure:

  • Fabric A — CX1087 Graphite: 1 yard, used for Template A, Template B, 5-1/2" squares, and binding strips.
  • Fabric B — CX1087 Magenta: 5/8 yard, used for Template A, Template B, and border strips.
  • Fabric C — CX8956 Pink: 5/8 yard, used for Template C pieces.
  • Fabric D — CX8960 Cream: 2/3 yard, used for Template A, Template B, and 5-1/2" x 10-1/2" rectangles.
  • Fabric E — CX8961 Black:
