Product Description

Courchevel includes two beret patterns for three different weights of yarn, so that you can create a timeless beret (or berets!) by using that special yarn purchase, or just by using what's already in your stash! Knit the fingering weight version (275 yards, US 3 16" circ and DPNs), shown here in a sleek slate colorway, for a beret that's perfect for a weekend in the city. The luscious amethyst worsted weight version (165 yards, US 6 and US 8 16" circs and US 8 DPNs) knits up quickly into a contemporary take on the classic beret, while the bulky weight beret (170 yards, US 9 and US 10.5 16" circs and US 10.5 DPNs) is the ultimate in winter-white coziness. Each beret features written instructions for a simple textured knit-purl pattern.

What Is Being Made

The Courchevel Beret is a classic adult beret pattern designed to fit head circumferences of 20–22 inches. This downloadable knitting pattern offers versatility through multiple yarn weight options, allowing crafters to choose between a sleek fingering-weight version ideal for refined, city-style wear or a quicker-to-knit DK-weight version that provides a contemporary interpretation of the traditional beret silhouette.

Yarn Options and Materials

The Courchevel Beret pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights, making it an excellent project for using specialty yarns from your stash or for justifying a targeted yarn purchase.

  • Fingering-Weight Version: Uses Koigu Premium Merino (100% merino wool; 175 yards per 50 grams), requiring 2 skeins. The example colorway shown is #2405.
  • DK-Weight Version: Uses Madelinetosh Tosh DK (100% superwash merino wool; 225 yards per 100 grams), requiring 1 skein. The example colorway featured is "Grape."

Needles and Tools

Both versions utilize a 16-inch circular needle paired with double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working in the round. Needle sizes are adjusted based on yarn weight and desired gauge:

  • Fingering-Weight: US 3 [3.25 mm] circular needle and DPNs
  • DK-Weight: US 6 [4 mm] and US 8 [5 mm] circular needles and DPNs

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Courchevel Beret is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern employs circular knitting methods, worked in the round using a combination of circular needles and DPNs to shape the beret crown and decrease sections. The construction allows for gauge adjustment and customization—crafters can reduce the suggested needle size for a tighter fit or smaller finished beret.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes familiarity with circular knitting, working with DPNs, and basic decreasing techniques. The straightforward construction makes it accessible to knitters progressing beyond beginner level while remaining engaging for experienced crafters seeking a classic, timeless project.

Design Features

The dual yarn-weight options provide creative flexibility, allowing knitters to produce either a refined, sleek beret using fingering-weight yarn or a contemporary, faster-to-complete version in DK weight. Both interpretations maintain the classic beret aesthetic while offering distinct visual and textural qualities based on yarn choice.
