How a knitted poncho is put together

Almost every poncho in this collection is built from one of four shapes, and knowing which one you are looking at tells you instantly how hard it will be. The simplest is two rectangles joined in an L, which gives the classic squared shoulder line and needs no shaping at all. Next is a single wide rectangle with a slit or folded neck. Then there is the seamless round yoke poncho, knitted from the neck down in the round with regular increases, which drapes in a soft circle. Finally the tapered cape, shaped with short rows across the back so the hem hangs level rather than riding up.

Because a poncho has no sleeves and no set-in armhole, it is one of the few large garments where a rough fit still looks intentional. That makes it an excellent second or third project after a scarf.

Choosing by yarn weight

• Super chunky and chunky: a weekend project. Warm, sculptural, and heavy, so keep the body short or the shoulders will drag.
• Aran: the natural home of cabled ponchos. Enough stitch definition for travelling cables without the weight of chunky.
• DK: the all-rounder, good for textured stitch patterns and children's ponchos.
• 4 ply and lace: summer cover-ups and evening capes with real drape, usually in cotton, linen or silk blends.

Tension, length and how much yarn

Tension matters less for fit than it does on a jumper, but it decides your yarn quantity and your drape. A loose fabric flows; a tight fabric stands away from the body. Knit a square, wash it and hang it vertically for an hour before measuring, because ponchos are worn hanging and many yarns grow under their own weight. Decide length by measuring from the base of your neck down your arm: mid-forearm is the flattering standard, elbow length is neater over a coat. Adult ponchos commonly take between 600 and 1,200 metres depending on weight and length, so buy to the pattern's yardage and keep to one dye lot.

Necklines, edgings and drape

The neckline decides whether a poncho sits well. A ribbed collar picked up around the opening pulls the fabric in and stops the whole thing sliding backwards. A folded cowl adds warmth and weight at the front. A plain bound-off edge is the lightest option and suits summer yarns. For the hem, a few rows of garter or moss stitch stop stocking stitch curling, and fringe adds swing but also weight. Blocking the finished piece flat, with the point or corners pinned, sets the drape properly.

Wearing and caring for it

Fold ponchos rather than hanging them; a wet or heavy knitted poncho on a hanger will stretch across the shoulders permanently. Wash by hand in lukewarm water unless the yarn is superwash, squeeze out in a towel and dry flat. If a cabled poncho flattens with wear, a light steam over the cables from the wrong side lifts them again.

What is the easiest poncho to knit? Two rectangles in garter or stocking stitch, seamed at right angles. No shaping, no sleeves and the seam is short.

Can I knit a poncho on straight needles? Yes for rectangle and flat cape shapes. Round yoke ponchos need a circular needle.

How much yarn does a poncho need? Follow the yardage in the pattern; a chunky adult poncho is usually far fewer metres than a fine one of the same size.

Should a poncho be knitted loosely? Slightly looser than for a jumper, since drape is the point, but not so loose that the fabric sags out of shape.
