What Caron makes, and which yarn does what

Caron has been spinning yarn since 1921 and the current line-up is built around easy-care acrylic and acrylic blends. Simply Soft is the anchor: a worsted-weight acrylic with a slight sheen and a soft, slippery hand that shows stitch definition well in single crochet and stocking stitch. Around it sit the variations — Simply Soft Heathers for a tweedy flecked look, Simply Soft Brites for saturated colour, Simply Soft Party for a metallic sparkle strand, Simply Soft Speckle and Simply Soft Tweeds for texture. The Cakes range is a different proposition entirely: long self-striping gradients wound into a cake, so the colour changes happen for you as you work.

Choosing between the Cakes

• Caron Cakes — the original aran/worsted gradient cake, ideal for shawls, big granny squares and one-cake hats where you want the stripe to do the design work.
• Baby Cakes — the same idea in softer pastel gradients, sized for baby blankets and cardigans.
• Big Cakes and Chunky Cakes — larger balls and heavier weights, so a blanket needs far fewer joins.
• Skinny Cakes — a finer gradient for shawls, wraps and lighter garments.
• Tea Cakes — soft blended colour changes rather than hard stripes.
• Caron One Pound — a plain solid workhorse in a very large ball, the sensible choice for a full-size afghan.
• Caron Cotton Cakes and Caron x Pantone — cotton-blend and colour-led options for homeware and summer makes.

How much you need

Work to metres rather than ball count, because the Cakes vary enormously in ball size. A single Caron Cake is usually enough for a slouchy hat and a cowl, or a small shawl. A pram blanket in worsted acrylic tends to sit around 700 to 900 metres; a generous sofa throw is more like 1,800 to 2,500 metres, which is why One Pound and Big Cakes exist. If you are striping deliberately with the gradient, buy the cakes together and check they start at the same point in the colour sequence — cakes wound from different production runs can begin mid-gradient.

Working with Caron acrylic

Acrylic has less spring than wool, so ribbing and cuffs relax more over time; going down a hook or needle size at the edges keeps them honest. Simply Soft in particular is slick, and stitches can slide off smooth metal needles — bamboo or wood gives you more grip. Acrylic also cannot be blocked with steam the way wool can: heat will kill the crimp permanently. Pin damp, let it dry, and you will get a gentle flattening rather than the dramatic opening-out you get from blocking a wool lace shawl.

Care and finishing

Caron's acrylics are machine washable and tumble-dry-friendly at low temperatures, which is the main reason they dominate baby blankets and charity knitting. Wash on a cool gentle cycle, dry flat if the piece is large and heavy, and avoid a hot iron entirely. Weave ends in generously — slick acrylic works loose more readily than wool, so give yourself a good few centimetres in two directions.
