Winter Fir Trees Knitting Pattern
Project Overview
Winter Fir Trees is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by ChrisdL that allows crafters to create a complete grove of decorative fir tree ornaments and toys. These charming winter decorations celebrate the holiday season and can be displayed individually or arranged together to form a festive forest scene. The pattern offers flexibility in both size and embellishment style, making it suitable for various creative preferences and skill levels within the intermediate range.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces three-dimensional knitted fir trees available in two distinct heights: a smaller 5-inch version and a larger 7-inch version. The trees are designed to be stuffed, creating dimensional decorative pieces that capture the silhouette and character of evergreen trees. These finished projects function as both ornaments and toys, making them versatile additions to holiday décor or as handmade gifts.
Embellishment Techniques and Variations
The pattern provides three distinct embellishment options, allowing knitters to customize their trees based on preference and experience:
- Bobble Firs: Feature textured bobbles that add dimensional detail and visual interest to the tree surface, creating a tactile, bumpy texture reminiscent of snow-laden branches
- Fair Isle Firs: Incorporate Fair Isle colorwork techniques, a traditional method of stranded knitting that creates patterned designs using two colors within the same row, adding sophisticated visual complexity
- Beaded Firs: Integrate beads into the knitted fabric, providing sparkle and decorative embellishment that catches light and adds elegance to the finished trees
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs knitting in the round, a fundamental technique that creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for three-dimensional projects like stuffed decorations. The in-the-round construction eliminates the need for seaming and ensures consistent fabric quality throughout the tree. The pattern utilizes standard knit and purl stitches as foundational elements, with specialized techniques layered on top depending on the chosen embellishment style. Fair Isle variations incorporate stranded colorwork, requiring knitters to manage multiple yarn colors simultaneously while maintaining consistent tension. Bobble construction adds textural elements through specialized stitch techniques that create raised, dimensional details. The pattern is designed to produce a firm fabric that will adequately contain poly-fil stuffing without allowing filling to show through.
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern samples are worked in Shepherd's Wool Worsted from Stonehenge Fiber Mill, a worsted-weight yarn available in 4-ounce skeins with 250 yards per skein. Color options featured in the sample include Blue Spruce, Sage, and White. Yardage requirements vary by tree size and embellishment choice:
- Bobble Firs: 75 yards for large trees, 40 yards for small trees
- Fair Isle Firs: 50 yards main color and 10 yards contrasting color for large trees; 30 yards main color and 5 yards contrasting color for small trees
- Beaded Firs: 60 yards for large trees, 35 yards for small trees
Needles: US size 5 (3.75 mm) needles suitable for knitting in the round, or the size necessary to achieve a firm gauge that prevents stuffing from showing through the finished fabric. Circular needles or double-pointed needles are appropriate choices.
Additional Materials: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing; poly-fil stuffing for creating dimensional form; and cardboard for base stabilization to help the trees stand upright.
Pattern Details
This downloadable PDF pattern, revised December 30, 2014, is authored by Chris de Longpré and published through Knitting at Knoon. The comprehensive pattern includes detailed instructions for each of the three embellishment variations, with separate sections dedicated to Bobble Firs, Fair Isle Firs, and Beaded Firs, ensuring clear guidance for whichever style the knitter selects. The intermediate difficulty rating indicates that knitters should have foundational knowledge of knitting in the round and basic stitch techniques, with additional comfort recommended for those attempting the Fair Isle colorwork variation.

Worth the money.
If I purchase a pattern, I want to be able to print it up without hassle, put it in my (paper) folder and be done.I wasn't able to do that with this purchase but after contacting you, I was able to print. Unfortunately it was ONE page at a time! Still a hassle but at least accomplished!
