Product Description

wanted to make a cabled hat for winter. I love cables and wanted something that was both fun and quick to knit. This cable pattern reminded me of a Wheatsheaf at harvest time, though some say it reminds them of warm Winter Kisses? The brim is ribbed (K1,P1) and can be made longer in Version 2 for a double thick folded brim which will be snuggly warm. The pattern is very stretchy. It will fit most heads between 16-22 inches for the smaller size and 22-25 inches for the m/l. The main difference between the Adult S and M/L is the depth of the hat and the cast on for the brim. The sizing is achieved by moving up a needle size and for the M/L size I used a 5.5mm/US9 circular needle for the main part of the hat. The hats are unisex and you have the option to add a pompom for a bit of winter fun.

Wheatsheaf Hat by Loraine Birchall

What is Being Made

The Wheatsheaf Hat is a unisex beanie design created by independent designer Loraine Birchall. This downloadable knitting pattern offers two distinct versions: Version 1 features a shorter brim with an optional pompom, while Version 2 includes a folded brim for added warmth and style. The pattern is available in multiple sizes to accommodate children and adults, with sizing options for Child/Adult Small and Adult Medium/Large.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Wheatsheaf Hat showcases cable knitting as its signature design element, which creates the distinctive wheatsheaf pattern that gives this hat its name. Cable stitches involve crossing groups of stitches over one another to produce raised, twisted textures that add visual interest and depth to the finished piece. This technique requires careful stitch manipulation but is accessible to beginner-level knitters when following clear pattern instructions.

The construction method uses ribbed knitting for the brim or cuff section, which creates vertical lines of texture that provide elasticity and help the hat fit snugly around the head. The body of the hat transitions from ribbing into the cable pattern work, combining functional and decorative elements in a single garment.

Yarn and Materials

The Wheatsheaf Hat pattern is designed to be worked with Debbie Bliss BFL Aran yarn, a natural fiber option in the aran weight category. Aran weight yarn is a medium-weight option that knits up quickly while providing good stitch definition for showcasing cable patterns.

Yardage requirements vary by size and version:

  • Version 1 (Shorter Brim): Child/Adult Small requires 120–150 yards; Adult Medium/Large requires 180–230 yards
  • Version 2 (Folded Brim): Child/Adult Small requires 150–200 yards; Adult Medium/Large requires 200–250 yards

Needles and Tools

The pattern specifies needle sizes appropriate for both the ribbed sections and the cable pattern body:

  • Ribbing needles (smaller gauge): Child/Adult Small uses 4mm/US6; Adult Medium/Large uses 4mm/US7
  • Body needles (larger gauge): Child/Adult Small uses 5mm/US8; Adult Medium/Large uses 5.5mm/US9

Using smaller needles for ribbing and slightly larger needles for the body creates a fabric with good stitch definition while allowing the cable pattern to display clearly. Cable needles are typically required for manipulating stitches during cable crossings, though specific cable needle recommendations are standard practice in knitting patterns.
