Product Description
I designed this beanie for my brother in law who together with my sister is travelling to Iceland on a 4-wheel driving tour.
The patterning is reminiscent of tyre tracks, inspired by the 4-wheel drive adventure!
I hope you enjoy knitting this beanie. The pattern is a combination of knit / purl stitches and I think it would be perfect for a beginner knitter who is just starting to stretch their skills!
You can use any 8 ply / DK yarn. I used Heritage Merino Magic fleck which is a 100% wool yarn a great chunky tweed texture.
Trax Knitted Beanie by Carolyn Stanton
What Is Being Made
The Trax Knitted Beanie is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Carolyn Stanton for creating a classic, fitted winter hat. This beginner-friendly beanie features a ribbed cuff and textured stitch pattern throughout, resulting in a finished circumference of 50cm (19¾ inches) and a height of 22cm (8¾ inches). The design is suitable for knitters new to hat construction and intermediate stitch techniques.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Trax Beanie employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner to early-intermediate crafters. The pattern uses the cable cast-on method to establish 116 stitches on the needles, providing a secure and elastic foundation. The beanie is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, meaning knitters will create two separate pieces that are later seamed together. Decreasing techniques are essential to the crown shaping, utilizing knit 2 together (K2T), knit 2 together through the back loops (K2TB), and purl 2 together (P2T) methods to gradually reduce stitch count and form the hat's tapered top.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern incorporates several fundamental stitches and stitch combinations:
- Knit stitch (K) – the basic foundation stitch
- Purl stitch (P) – the reverse of the knit stitch, used to create texture and ribbing
- Ribbed pattern – created using alternating knit and purl stitches in a K1, P1 sequence for the first 16 rows, providing stretch and elasticity at the cuff
- Textured stitch pattern – rows 17 onwards introduce a more complex pattern combining knit and purl stitches in varying sequences to create visual interest and dimension
- Decreases – K2T, K2TB, and P2T stitches are used to shape the crown and reduce the overall stitch count as the hat tapers toward the top
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Trax Beanie requires 8 ply or DK (double knit) weight yarn totaling 100 grams or approximately 210 to 220 meters (yards). The pattern specifies two 50-gram balls of yarn. The designer used Heirloom Merino Magic Fleck in colorway 558 "Cinder Fleck" for the sample shown. DK weight yarn is a versatile mid-weight option that knits to a gauge of 22 stitches and 37 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches) on 3.75mm (US size 5) knitting needles. This gauge and needle size combination creates a fabric with good drape and structure suitable for winter wear.
Tools Required
Knitters will need 3.75mm (US size 5) straight knitting needles to work this pattern flat. Standard knitting notions such as stitch markers, a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, and measuring tools are also recommended to ensure accurate gauge and proper fit.
