Product Description
Having always lived close to the sea, it is perhaps no surprise that I find inspiration in the waves, the salty air, the changing colour of water, the shapes of shells and the patterns of tides drawn out on sandy beaches. The regularity of tides, much like the rhythm of knitting, has been a calming influence, particularly at a time when I was given a diagnosis of Tourette Syndrome, a neurological tic disorder. For me, knitting has become a meditative activity. An occasional row of colour work, or, as in this design, cables which need more concentration, refocuses drifting or intrusive thoughts back to the present in a mindful way. This triangular shawl is worked from side-to-side, smallest point to smallest point. Its cable design reaches a “high tide” in the middle, then re-traces its steps to the cast off. I hope you will find its squishy rib a comfort to make and wear, particularly when you need reminding that the tide will always turn, and your ebb will again become a flow
Tide Turner Shawl by The Ticcy Knitter
What is Being Made
The Tide Turner is a triangular knitted shawl designed to be worn as a wrap or shoulder piece. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a garment inspired by coastal themes and the natural rhythm of ocean tides. The shawl features a thoughtful design philosophy rooted in the meditative qualities of knitting, making it suitable for crafters seeking both a beautiful finished piece and a calming creative process.
Construction Method
This shawl is worked side-to-side, beginning from one smallest point and progressing toward the center before retracing the pattern back to the cast off edge. This construction method creates a symmetrical triangular shape with the cable design reaching its visual peak at the midpoint, creating a "high tide" effect before the pattern mirrors itself on the return journey.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Cable stitches form the primary decorative element, creating texture and visual interest that requires focused concentration during knitting
- Rib stitches contribute to the shawl's characteristic squishy texture, providing comfort and elasticity
- Colour work is incorporated occasionally throughout the design for added visual depth
Yarn and Materials
The Tide Turner is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-weight option that provides good stitch definition for cable work while remaining lightweight enough for comfortable shawl wear. Knitting needles appropriate for DK yarn are required to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle cable techniques and more complex stitch patterns. The cable work requires attentive concentration, which the designer notes can serve a mindful, meditative purpose during the knitting process.
