Product Description

This thrummed aviator cap begins at the top and increases along four lines, much like the directional winds. The cap is made extra luxe with a touch of silk, and extra warm with thrums, which are bits of fiber worked into the fabric. The earflaps are finished with I-cord tails. You’ll be toasty warm despite the chilly upper atmosphere!

This pattern is in the book Doomsday Knits, which is currently available at cooperativepress.com, as well as here on Ravelry.

There's a link to my video on how to thrum in the pattern. Here's an extra link for continental style knitters, in case your thrums are not looking like V's:

Thrumviator Thrummed Aviator Cap by Michele Bernstein

What Is Being Made

The Thrumviator is a luxurious aviator-style cap designed by Michele Bernstein. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a warm, structured hat featuring an aviator silhouette with protective earflaps. The cap combines traditional aviator hat styling with contemporary fiber arts techniques, making it both functional and visually distinctive. The finished hat is designed for maximum warmth and comfort, ideal for cold weather conditions.

Construction and Design Approach

This knitted aviator cap employs a top-down construction method, beginning at the crown and expanding outward along four directional increase lines. This architectural approach mirrors the concept of directional winds, creating a structurally sound cap that increases evenly from the center point. The earflaps are a key design feature, finished with decorative i-cord tails that add both visual interest and functional warmth around the ears and neck area.

Thrumming Technique

Thrumming is a specialized knitting technique that involves working bits of fiber directly into the fabric as you knit. These fiber segments, called thrums, are integrated into stitches to create an exceptionally warm and insulated textile. The thrums trap air and add significant thermal properties to the finished hat, making the Thrumviator particularly effective for cold weather wear. This technique elevates the cap from a standard knit to an extra-luxe garment with superior insulating qualities.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Top-down construction beginning at the crown
  • Directional increases along four lines for shaping
  • Thrumming technique for integrated fiber warmth
  • I-cord finishing on earflap tails
  • Structured shaping for aviator silhouette

Materials and Fiber Content

The Thrumviator incorporates a touch of silk fiber into its construction, adding luxury and refined texture to the finished hat. Beyond the silk component, the pattern utilizes yarn suitable for thrumming work, along with thrums—prepared fiber pieces that are worked into the knit fabric. The combination of silk and thrummed fibers creates a hat that is both elegant and exceptionally warm, balancing aesthetic appeal with practical thermal performance.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the Thrumviator requires solid foundational knitting skills. Knitters should be comfortable with top-down hat construction, working increases, and managing multiple stitches on needles. The thrumming technique, while learnable, adds complexity beyond basic knitting. The designer provides video tutorials to support knitters through the thrumming process, including a supplementary tutorial for those working in continental knitting style.

Pattern Origin

The Thrumviator pattern was originally published in Doomsday Knits, edited by Alex Tinsley and published by Cooperative Press in 2013. This collection-published design has been made available as a downloadable PDF, allowing knitters to access Michele Bernstein's innovative design directly.
