Product Description
The Hermione Housecoat is an oversized, open- front cardigan perfect for cozy days in front of the fire reading Harry Potter ;)
Its made with a size 5 yarn and uses both a 6.5 and a 5.5mm crochet hook. I used Paintbox simply chunky yarn and my testers used Color Made Easy Yarn from Lionbrand. Both worked well and had good drape!!
This pattern comes in sizes XS/S, M/L, XL/XXL

What is Being Made
The Hermione Housecoat is a crochet cardigan designed as a comfortable, wearable housecoat. This garment is constructed in separate pieces—a back panel, two front panels, and sleeves—that are worked individually before being assembled. The pattern is available in three size ranges: XS/S, M/L, and XL/XXL, making it accessible for various body types.
Crochet Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly crochet project employs several fundamental techniques to create texture and structure. The pattern utilizes post stitches to add dimensional detail, specifically Front Post Half Double Crochet (FPHDC) and Back Post Half Double Crochet (BPHDC) stitches. These post stitches wrap around the posts of previous rows, creating a ribbed or textured appearance that adds visual interest and elasticity to the finished garment. The sleeves are worked from the shoulder down, a common construction method that allows for customizable sleeve length and a smooth fit at the armhole.
Stitches Used
The Hermione Housecoat incorporates the following crochet stitches:
- Single Crochet (SC) — a basic, tight stitch used for foundational rows
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) — a medium-height stitch that creates a balanced fabric with good drape
- Front Post Half Double Crochet (FPHDC) — worked around the post of the previous row for textured detail
- Back Post Half Double Crochet (BPHDC) — worked around the post of the previous row from the back for dimensional ribbing
- Slip Stitch (Sl St) — used to join rounds and finish off edges
Each row is turned with a chain stitch that does not count toward the stitch count, a standard practice in row-based crochet construction.
Materials and Tools
This project requires 1300 to 1500 yards of size 5 (chunky weight) yarn, providing ample yardage for a substantial, cozy garment. Two crochet hooks are needed: a 6.5mm hook (the primary hook used for the main fabric) and a 5.5mm hook (likely used for finishing or edging details). Additional supplies include scissors, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and a stitch marker to track your place during construction.
Pattern Structure and Gauge
The pattern is written in US crochet terminology and includes stitch counts at the end of each row and round for easy tracking and error correction. Clarification photos are provided at the end of the PDF to help visualize techniques. The recommended gauge is 10 Half Double Crochet stitches and 9 rows per 4 inches when worked with the 6.5mm hook, ensuring proper fit and fabric drape. This beginner-level pattern is ideal for crocheters new to garment construction or those seeking a straightforward, satisfying project.
