What Is Being Made

Swatching Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Stefanie Bold as a functional alternative to traditional gauge swatches. Rather than knitting a separate swatch to test gauge before beginning a sock project, these socks allow you to knit the foot section as your gauge swatch while simultaneously creating a wearable garment. The design begins at the toe and progresses upward, with the initial foot section in stockinette stitch serving dual purposes: establishing your gauge and forming the foundation of the finished sock.

Design Features and Construction

The Swatching Socks follow a thoughtful construction sequence that transforms a practical gauge-testing exercise into an interesting finished project. The sock begins at the toe with a smooth stockinette stitch foot section, where you can measure and calculate your gauge before committing to the remainder of the sock. Once you reach the gusset area, the design introduces visual interest through cable patterning to prevent the upper portion from becoming monotonous.

The gusset increases are worked in purl stitches, creating a subtle textural contrast. Cable stripes cross over the instep in a pattern reminiscent of shoe lacing, adding both aesthetic appeal and structural interest to the foot. Rather than finishing with the traditional ribbed cuff, the sock features a large seed stitch (perlmuster) pattern for the cuff, providing a different textural experience and visual break from the cables below.

The Swatching Socks are designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a standard choice for sock knitting that provides durability and a refined finished fabric. The pattern specifies 2mm needles and establishes a gauge of 34 stitches and 50 rounds over 10 centimeters in stockinette stitch. This gauge measurement can be taken directly from your completed foot section, eliminating the need for a separate swatch. Alternatively, if your yarn has an unknown or non-standard gauge, you can knit the entire patterned sock as your gauge swatch, making this design exceptionally practical for yarn exploration and experimentation.
