Sunset Rock Cardigan by VERSACIKNITS
Project Overview
Sunset Rock is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by VERSACIKNITS. This downloadable PDF pattern provides comprehensive instructions for creating a sophisticated layering piece suitable for a range of sizes from XS through 3X. The cardigan features overlapping fronts with approximately 10-12 inches of positive ease, making it a versatile garment for various body types and styling preferences.
What Is Being Made
The Sunset Rock cardigan is a structured knit garment featuring overlapping front panels. The design includes finished measurements at the chest ranging from 41 inches in the smallest size to 65 inches in the largest size, with lengths varying from 21¼ inches to 25½ inches depending on the selected size. The overlapping front construction creates a flattering, adjustable closure system that allows for customizable fit and styling options.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern calls for The Uncommon Thread Everyday Sport weight yarn, which is composed of 100% Superwash Merino Wool. Each skein contains 300 meters of yardage and weighs 100 grams. The total yardage required ranges from approximately 1250 yards for the XS size to 2200 yards for the 3X size, depending on the finished garment dimensions. Knitters will need between 4 and 7 skeins to complete the project across the size range.
Needles and Tools
The pattern specifies Size 5 US (3.25mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches and 16 inches in length. Circular needles are used throughout the construction process, which is typical for seamless knit garment design.
Gauge and Tension
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this intermediate project. The required gauge is 24 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch when worked on larger needles and blocked. Knitters are advised to take time to check gauge before beginning, as accurate gauge directly impacts the finished measurements and fit of the cardigan.
Stitches and Techniques
The Sunset Rock cardigan utilizes fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The primary stitch pattern is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic fabric base for this garment. The pattern includes specialized construction techniques such as working stitches from a resulting loop, demonstrating the seamless construction methods employed throughout the design. The overlapping front closure system requires careful attention to shaping and finishing details.
Construction Method
This cardigan employs a structured construction approach, likely utilizing circular needles for seamless or minimal-seam assembly. The pattern provides detailed guidance on how stitches are worked and manipulated, including techniques such as knitting into the front of a resulting loop, which contributes to the polished appearance of the finished garment. The overlapping front panels require precise shaping to ensure proper fit and aesthetic balance.
