Product Description
Lovely little sweater and jacket for your Blythe doll. A cozy smock style sweater and a felted jacket. You will need a 4ply or fine DK weight yarn that will felt. It is basically the same pattern with different instructions for making up. You will need a 3mm crochet hook too for going round the edges of the garment and creating button loops. I dip dyed the jacket but it would look great in a stripey yarn too!
Smock Sweater and Felted Jacket for Blythe Doll
What is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a charming smock sweater designed specifically for Blythe dolls, a popular collectible doll known for its distinctive large eyes and customizable appearance. The pattern includes instructions for constructing a fitted garment that showcases the doll's proportions, along with a complementary felted jacket option. These pieces are ideal for doll enthusiasts looking to expand their Blythe wardrobe with handmade, custom-fitted clothing.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using knitting, a fundamental fiber arts technique that builds fabric from a single continuous yarn using two needles. Knitting is an excellent choice for doll clothing because it allows for precise sizing and the creation of fitted garments that drape naturally on miniature forms. The pattern demonstrates intermediate-level knitting skills, making it suitable for crafters with some prior knitting experience who are ready to tackle shaping techniques and garment construction.
Stitches and Shaping Techniques Used
The smock sweater pattern employs several essential knitting stitches and techniques:
- Knit (K) – the fundamental stitch that creates a smooth, textured fabric
- Purl (P) – the reverse of the knit stitch, used in combination with knits
- Stocking Stitch (SS) – created by alternating rows of knit and purl stitches, producing the classic smooth fabric with a V-pattern on the right side
- Increases (Inc) – strategic increases worked by knitting into the horizontal strand between stitches on the needles and knitting into the back of the loop, allowing the garment to expand gradually for shaping
The pattern uses a systematic increase sequence across multiple rows to create the smock's characteristic fitted silhouette. These increases are distributed strategically throughout the piece to shape the sweater body and sleeve cap, demonstrating intermediate shaping skills essential for garment construction.
Materials and Tools
The smock sweater pattern calls for 4 ply pure wool yarn that is specifically suitable for felting. Four-ply yarn, also known as sport weight or DK weight, provides an ideal thickness for doll-scale garments, allowing for detailed stitch definition while remaining manageable for miniature projects. The pure wool fiber is essential for the felting process, as synthetic fibers do not felt. Crafters will need 2.75mm knitting needles to work with the 4 ply yarn at the correct gauge, ensuring proper fabric density and fit for the Blythe doll.
Pattern Construction Details
The smock sweater begins with casting on 32 stitches and working in stocking stitch as the foundation. The pattern then progresses through a series of increase rows that gradually expand the width of the piece. The increases are worked at specific intervals across rows 11 through 17, creating a shaped silhouette. The pattern demonstrates how to divide stitches for working the body and sleeves separately, a technique common in top-down or seamless garment construction. The sleeve instructions begin after the body shaping is complete, with the pattern directing crafters to work 14 stitches designated for the sleeve while keeping other stitches on a spare needle for later completion.
Felted Jacket Component
In addition to the smock sweater, this pattern includes instructions for creating a felted jacket. The felting process transforms knitted wool fabric through controlled washing and agitation, causing the fibers to bond together and creating a denser, more structured material. This technique adds dimension to the Blythe doll's wardrobe by providing a contrasting textured piece that complements the smooth knitted sweater.
