Product Description
This is an unusual hat that uses the different weights of yarn to give texture to the body of the hat. It is steampunk style and finished with toggles on the sides. My testers have come up with all sorts of unusual fasteners so take a look :)
A great pattern for using up scraps of different weight yarns and one skein of a beautiful bulky that you didn't know what to do with.
The construction makes this an intermediate pattern.
Serpensortia has been tested by the wonderful testers in The Happy Hookers Hangout.

Serpensortia Hat by Sarahjanedesigns
What Is Being Made
The Serpensortia Hat is a crochet hat design available in three sizes: Small (child), Medium, and Large. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a structured, fitted hat with decorative snake toggle closures. The hat measures 18.5" around for Small, 20.5" for Medium, and 22" for Large, with corresponding depths of 8.5", 9.5", and 10.5" respectively. The design accommodates head sizes from 18.5" to 24" in circumference, making it suitable for children and adults.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The construction utilizes single crochet and double crochet stitches as primary structural elements. Correct tension and gauge are emphasized as essential for successful completion, requiring crocheters to work with two different yarn weights and hook sizes within the same project. The pattern involves working in rounds to create the crown and body of the hat, with stitch markers or scrap yarn used to track round beginnings throughout the construction process.
Stitches Used
- Single Crochet (sc): Used with a G/4mm hook and fine DK or sports weight yarn, worked at a gauge of 18 stitches and 20 rows over 4 inches
- Double Crochet (dc): Worked with an H/5mm hook and bulky weight yarn, achieving a gauge of 12 stitches and 6 rows over 4 inches
Materials and Tools Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for 1 skein of bulky weight yarn (130 yards/120 meters) such as Cardellino by Moda Vera, or any comparable bulky, Aran, or heavy worsted weight yarn. Additionally, 100 yards/90 meters of fine DK or sports weight yarn is needed. This two-yarn approach creates textural contrast and structural variety within the finished hat.
Hooks and Notions: An H/5mm crochet hook and a G/4mm crochet hook are required, or alternative sizes that produce the correct tension for each yarn weight. A yarn needle for weaving in ends, a sewing needle with matching thread, 2 metal snake toggles or other suitable toggle closures, and stitch markers, scrap yarn, or safety pins for tracking rounds complete the necessary supplies.
Pattern Notes
Achieving correct gauge in both yarn weights is critical for this project's success. Crocheters must swatch and verify tension using single crochet with the G/4mm hook and fine DK/sports weight yarn, as well as double crochet with the H/5mm hook and bulky weight yarn before beginning the hat. The decorative snake toggles serve as functional closures, adding a distinctive design element to the finished piece.
