What is Being Made

The Royal Chevron Beret is an elegant, warm two-color winter hat featuring a sophisticated chevron design. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a classic beret in women's sizing (L/XL), suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a project that combines colorwork techniques with traditional hat construction.

Construction Method

This beret is knitted in the round from the bottom-up, allowing for seamless construction and a professional finish. The pattern offers flexibility in execution, providing two distinct methods for completing the garment to suit different knitter preferences and skill comfort levels.

Knitting Techniques and Stitch Options

The Royal Chevron Beret accommodates two primary colorwork approaches:

  • Slipped Stitch Method: Knitters can work with slipped (shifted) stitches using only one color per round. This technique simplifies color changes and is supported by detailed written instructions provided stitch-by-stitch and round-by-round throughout the pattern.
  • Stranded Colorwork/Fair Isle Technique: Alternatively, knitters may employ traditional stranded colorwork or Fair Isle knitting, carrying both colors across the round. This method is supported by a charted pattern for visual reference and precise color placement.

Both techniques create the distinctive chevron design while building intermediate-level colorwork skills. The pattern requires competency in knitting in the round and managing multiple colors within a single project.

Needles and Tools Required

  • One 16-inch (40cm) circular needle in US 7 / 4.5mm
  • Double-pointed needles (DPNs) in US 7 / 4.5mm for crown shaping (set of 4+1)
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends

Yarn Requirements and Materials

The Royal Chevron Beret requires two skeins in contrasting colors. The pattern accommodates flexible yarn weight combinations:

  • DK Weight Woolen Yarn: Two skeins in DK weight provide the primary option for this project
  • Mixed Weight Option: Knitters may combine DK and sport weight yarns, provided they are tightly stranded to maintain consistent fabric density
  • Color Possibilities: The pattern works with solid colors, colorful combinations, self-striping yarns, or specialty yarns featuring embellishments such as lamé, sequins, or beads

The women's beret shown in the pattern documentation uses approximately 60 grams of Alize Lanagold Clas for the primary color (C1), with the secondary color (C2) requiring a similar yardage amount. Knitters should verify total yardage requirements based on their specific yarn selections.

Pattern Format and Language

This is a downloadable PDF pattern provided in English, offering both written instructions and charted guidance. The dual-format approach supports different learning styles and ensures clarity whether knitters prefer to follow row-by-row written directions or work from visual charts.

Skill Level

Designed for intermediate knitters, this project requires prior experience with knitting in the round, basic colorwork techniques, and comfort managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously. The pattern's flexibility in technique selection allows knitters to choose the method that best matches their current skill level and experience with colorwork.
