Rocking Horse Crochet Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
What Is Being Made
This is a crochet rocking horse pattern designed by Kerri's Crochet. The project creates a decorative rocking horse toy suitable for intermediate-level crocheters. The finished piece features a rocking base component and a horse body constructed from crocheted pieces that are sewn together.
Craft and Technique Overview
This is a crochet project using the UK crochet terminology system. The pattern involves creating individual crocheted pieces that are then assembled together using a sewing needle and thread. The construction method combines basic shaping techniques with color changes to create visual interest in the finished toy.
Stitches Used
The Rocking Horse pattern employs a variety of fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch) – used to create the foundation rows
- Double crochet (dc) – the primary stitch used throughout most of the pattern
- Half treble crochet (htr) – provides additional height and texture variation
- Treble crochet (tr) – creates taller stitches for specific shaping
- Double treble crochet (dtr) – the tallest stitch used for particular design elements
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used to join rounds and finish edges
- Joined double crochet – a technique combining two stitches together to create shaping and decrease
Materials Required
The pattern calls for 4-ply crochet cotton or wool yarn in four colors plus black for embroidery details. Additional materials include:
- Crochet hook (size appropriate for 4-ply yarn)
- Scissors
- Thread for sewing pieces together
- Sewing needle
- Darning needle for weaving in yarn ends
- Black cotton thread for embroidering nostrils
- Seed beads (optional) for attaching decorative flowers
Pattern Structure
The rocking horse is constructed using multiple crocheted components. The rocking piece begins with a foundation chain of 45 stitches and is worked in rows using a combination of double crochet and joined double crochet stitches to create shaping. The pattern uses color changes across the four yarn colors to build the horse's body and features. Assembly involves sewing the completed pieces together with a needle and thread, then adding embroidered details and optional beaded embellishments.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with multiple stitches, color changes, and piece assembly. A free video tutorial is available on Kerri's Crochet YouTube channel to support crafters following this pattern.
