Ripple Stitch Baby Blanket by Christine Longe
Project Overview
The Ripple Stitch Baby Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet design created by Christine Longe of Lakeview Cottage Kids. This downloadable crochet pattern produces a soft, textured baby blanket perfect for newborns and suitable for heirloom collections. The blanket features a classic ripple stitch pattern that creates visual movement and dimension while remaining accessible to newer crocheters.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a single-size baby blanket designed specifically for infants. The finished blanket combines texture and comfort, making it an ideal gift for new parents or a cherished keepsake piece. The ripple stitch construction produces a blanket with gentle waves and undulating texture throughout.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
The primary technique featured in this pattern is the ripple stitch, a classic crochet method that creates distinctive wave-like patterns. This stitch is achieved through strategic increases and decreases worked across rows, producing the characteristic peaks and valleys that give the blanket its textured appearance. The ripple stitch technique is ideal for beginners because it uses basic crochet fundamentals while creating visually impressive results.
The pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches and shaping methods that build foundational skills. The repetitive nature of the ripple stitch makes it meditative and satisfying for crocheters of all experience levels, particularly those advancing from absolute beginner to advanced beginner status.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Approximately 1.25 skeins of Yarnspirations Caron One Pound yarn in aran weight. The pattern uses Color A (Cream) for one full skein and Color B (Sky Blue) for approximately one-quarter of the second skein, allowing for a two-color design
- Crochet Hook: Size "I" hook
- Additional Supplies: Scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in ends
Yarn Weight and Fiber Characteristics
This pattern uses aran weight yarn, a medium-weight option that works up quickly and creates a blanket with good drape and structure. Aran weight yarn is substantial enough to produce a cozy, warm blanket suitable for babies while remaining soft and gentle against delicate skin. The Caron One Pound skeins provide excellent yardage and value, making this an economical project choice.
Skill Level and Suitability
Designed at an advanced beginner skill level, this blanket pattern is perfect for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore stitch variations and texture techniques. The ripple stitch, while creating a sophisticated appearance, relies on repeating sequences that become intuitive with practice, making this an excellent project for building confidence and developing consistent tension.
